Report of Committee for Development Policy Reviews Indicators of LDCs [viewed]

May 2011: The report of the 13th session of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP), which took place from 21-25 March 2011, has just been released. The report reviews the Committee's consideration of the following themes: education for all, issues related to the Least Developed Countries (including monitoring of the development progress of Equatorial Guinea and Samoa), and migration and development.

SPC Highlights Impacts of Climate Change on Agriculture [viewed]

19 May 2011: In addresses to two recent climate change meetings in the Pacific region, Inoke Ratukalou, Acting Director of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Land Resource Division (LRD), has stressed the need to protect SIDS' agriculture sector from the impacts of climate change, and emphasized that climate change should be considered a development issue, not just an environmental one.

SPREP and SPC Assisting Tuvalu to Develop National Climate Change Policy [viewed]

18 May 2011: In response to a request from Tuvalu, a joint team from the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Applied Geoscience and Technology (SOPAC) Division is on mission in the country to assist in the development of a Tuvalu National Climate Change Policy and Joint Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management National Action Plan (JNAP).

12 May 2011: Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, NASA, HP and the World Bank, through their initiative titled "Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK)," will bring together thousands of people in over 18 locations worldwide, on 4-5 June 2011, to create open source e-solutions to disaster risk management and climate change adaptation challenges.

FAO Releases Report on Mega-Fires and Climate Change [viewed]

10 May 2011: At the International Wildland Fire Conference in Sun City, South Africa, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) released a preliminary report titled “Findings and Implications from a Coarse-Scale Global Assessment of Recent Selected Mega-Fires.” The report suggests that changing climate may be exacerbating the growing number of mega-fires and resulting in a positive feedback loop.

Ozone2Climate Technology Road Show Begins in the Maldives [viewed]

9 May 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) OzonAction Programme has launched the Ozone2Climate Technology Road Show, and ozone- and climate-friendly technology exhibition, in the Maldives. The Road Show aims to supplement global efforts to eliminate ozone depleting substances (ODS) by showcasing technological alternatives that will contribute to the achievement of the common goal of protecting the ozone layer and the climate system.

US, Canada and Mexico, and Federated States of Micronesia Propose HFCs Phase-down Under Montreal Protocol [viewed]

May 2011: The Ozone Secretariat has released documents in the lead up to the upcoming 31st Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) meeting, scheduled to convene in Bangkok, Thailand, in August 2011. The documents include a proposal from the US, Canada and Mexico, and one from the Federated States of Micronesia, to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the Montreal Protocol.

ILO Releases Report on Employment in LDCs [viewed]

April 2011: In preparation for the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC IV) taking place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 9-13 May 2011, the International Labour Organization (ILO) released a report titled "Growth, Employment and Decent Work in the Least Developed Countries."
