Event: Pacific Regional Meeting on Gender, Climate Change and Sustainable Development [viewed]

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Diverse Voices and Action for Equality, and the Pacific Youth Council are convening this regional meeting to discuss priorities and partnerships to advance the consideration of gender issues, climate change and disaster risk reduction in the international policy agenda, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the post-2015 development agenda. Participants will discuss how they can work together in putting forward Pacific perspectives. Enele Sopoaga, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, will chair a high-level segment on 13 June.

SPREP Supports Island Resilience in Kiribati and Samoa [viewed]

SPREP23 May 2014: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has undertaken initiatives to promote Natural Solutions for Island Resilience in Kiribati and Samoa. In Kiribati, SPREP has implemented Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) activities, such as planting natural vegetation, monitoring key sites, and controlling erosion with natural materials.

Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial Addresses Finance, Markets and Energy-Water Nexus [viewed]

cem513 May 2014: Energy ministers and high-level delegates from 23 countries, as well as representatives from the private sector and international organizations, gathered for the Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM5) to discuss accelerating the transition toward a global clean energy economy and to assess progress made since CEM1 in 2010. Around 250 participants attended the meeting, which convened a set of public-private roundtables and a Ministerial segment on clean energy, integration, energy efficiency and human capacity.

EU, GIZ Support Climate Resilience, Energy Security in the Pacific [viewed]

giz-eu9 May 2014: The EU and the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) have signed an agreement to support 15 Pacific island countries in adapting to climate change impacts through sustainable livelihoods and in reducing their dependence on fossil fuels. The €18.6 million agreement will fund the first of a three-part, €35 million programme on ‘Adapting to Climate Change and Sustainable Energy' (ACSE), designed to promote energy security at all levels.

Major Economies Forum Calls for Urgent Climate Action [viewed]

WMO South West Pacific Meeting Addresses Strengthened Weather and Climate Services [viewed]

Air Pollution in Most Cities Exceeds WHO Guidelines [viewed]

WHO7 May 2014: The 2014 Ambient Air Pollution in Cities Database released by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that air quality in most cities around the globe is much higher than recommended by WHO's Guidelines on Air Quality, with many cities showing a declining trend.
