UNEP Risø Supports Pacific Island Country Participation in Carbon Expo [viewed]

UNEP Risoe12 November 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre supported the participation of 12 representatives from Pacific island countries in the Carbon Expo Australasia 2012, which took place from 7-9 November 2012, in Melbourne, Australia. According to the Risø Centre, representatives from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu attended the Expo.

GEF Council Approves Work Program with Ten Climate Change Projects/Programs [viewed]

15 November 2012: The 43rd Meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council adopted a Work Program that amounts to US$174 million and benefits 63 countries. Ten of the projects and programs approved focus on climate change.

IEA Lauds Australia's Efforts for a Low-Carbon Economy [viewed]

IEA19 November 2012: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a new report, titled "Energy Policy of IEA Countries: Australia 2012," which lauds Australia's efforts to develop a low-carbon economy, and recommends further investments in education, monitoring and evaluation of progress, and energy efficiency.

UNFCCC Releases QELRO's from Australia, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein and Ukraine [viewed]

UNFCCC26 November 2012: The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG KP) released the quantified emission limitation or reduction objectives (QELROs) for the second commitment period from Australia, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein and Ukraine.

UNFCCC Releases Submissions on the New Market Mechanism [viewed]

UNFCCC26 November 2012: The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG LCA) released additional submissions from Cyprus and the European Commission (EC) on behalf of the EU and its member States and Papua New Guinea on views on the new market based mechanism.

Event: Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States [viewed]

The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This UN conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia". In addition, a Partnerships Forum will take place on 30-31 August.

Event: Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee for 3rd International Conference on SIDS [viewed]

The first preparatory meeting (PrepCom) for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) will take place from 24-26 February 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, according to a draft decision approved in the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee on 11 December 2013 (A/C.2/68/L.67). The SIDS Conference is scheduled for 1-4 September 2014, in Apia, Samoa.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Submission from Parties on Various Approaches [viewed]

SPREP Releases Pacific Environment and Climate Change Outlook for 2012 [viewed]

SPREP30 November 2012: A new report by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) demonstrates increasing environmental and economic pressures on Pacific islands due to climate change, which it projects to possibly cost low-lying islands as much as 18% of their GDP.
