Pacific Smaller Island States Call for More Action on Climate Change [viewed]

6 September 2011: Pacific Smaller Island States (SIS) have called for increased action by the global community to curb the rate of climate change, according to the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat (PIFS). At their meeting in Auckland, New Zealand on 6 September, SIS leaders adopted the SIS Leaders Statement on Climate Change.

UNEP FI Convenes Oceania Consultation on Sustainable Insurance Principles [viewed]

UNEP FISeptember 2011: As part of its work to develop sustainability principles for the insurance industry, the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) convened a consultation with Oceania stakeholders from 11-12 August 2011, in Auckland, New Zealand. The meeting was the fourth of seven UN-convened regional consultation meetings on the sustainability principles for the insurance industry.

Event: South Pacific Regional Writeshop to Support Developing Country Publications on Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation to Climate Change [viewed]

The Writeshop will be hosted by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the University of the South Pacific (USP), with support of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. The Writeshop will address topics relevant to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction including policies, institutions and governance issues to adaptation and disaster risk reduction, and experiences with specific extreme climate events in the region.

UN-REDD Newsletter Highlights National Activities and Progress [viewed]

UNREDD Newsletter30 August 2011: The UN-REDD's August Newsletter reviews several national-level and global-level activities related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+). The Newsletter states that Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Paraguay and Solomon Islands have begun the implementation phase of their National REDD Programmes, while Nigeria has begun its REDD+ readiness phase with activities including setting safeguards and inventorying national greenhouse gas emissions.

Event: Experts Meeting on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development and Adaptation in SIDS [viewed]

The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing this international expert meeting, with participants primarily from small island developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, representing national education representatives, curriculum development experts, representatives of school and education networks, scientists and climate change experts, representatives of multilateral agencies and civil society. The conference will focus on the challenges climate change poses to education systems in SIDS, and on promoting education to enhance adaptation to climate change in the context of sustainable development. The meeting will develop a road map and recommendations to serve as a contribution to UNFCCC COP 17, the UNCSD and the End-of-Decade Conference of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

OECD Paper Reviews Policies for Investing in Renewable Energy Plants [viewed]
