Event: Thirteenth Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate [viewed]

The thirteenth meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate will convene in Crystal City, Virginia, US (just outside Washington, DC), from 17-18 November 2011. US Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Michael Froman will serve as chair. The meeting will take place at the level of leaders' representatives. Members of the Major Economies Forum include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the UK, and the United States. In addition, representatives will attend from Argentina, Ecuador, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, and the United Nations. The session will provide an opportunity to exchange views in preparation for the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

UNICEF Studies Children's Vulnerability to Climate Change [viewed]

14 November 2011: The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has released a report on the climate change challenges that children face in East Asia and the Pacific. The report indicates that climate change will exacerbate the living conditions of millions of children in the region, who already suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation and are vulnerable to malnutrition and diseases.

Report of the 15th Adaptation Fund Board Meeting Released [viewed]

Adaptation Fund14 November 2011: The Adaptation Fund has released the report of the 15th meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board (AFB), which was held from 15-16 September 2011, in Bonn, Germany. At the meeting, the AFB discussed issues related to accreditation of Regional Implementing Entities (RIE) and National Implementing Entities (NIE), as well as the application of a cap on funding for projects proposed by Multilateral Implementing Entities (MIE).

GEF Council, LDCF and SCCF Approve Projects on Climate Change and Blue Carbon [viewed]

10 November 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, at its 41st Council Meeting, approved decisions on the administration of the GEF as well as a work programme of 40 stand-alone projects and nine programmatic approaches amounting to US$516.40 million, including several climate change and energy-related projects. Projects were also approved within the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) and Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF).

The event was organized under the theme "New Challenges, New Opportunities," and participants discussed governance, communication and the future of the region's forests.

UNDP Bulletin Highlights AusAID Support to Pacific Islands Adaptation Initiatives [viewed]

UNDP30 October 2011: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has released the seventh issue of its Climate Change Adaptation Bulletin, which reports on the announcement by the Government of Australia to contribute Aus$7.35 million to finance the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) Initiative, implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

Pacific Community Conference Focuses on Climate Change and Food Security [viewed]

8 November 2011: The seventh Conference of the Pacific Community convened in Noumea, New Caledonia, under the theme “Climate Change and Food Security – Managing the Risks for Sustainable Development,” from 7-8 November 2011. The Conference emphasized the importance of a paradigm shift in addressing climate change, not necessarily “doing different business, but rather doing business differently” to determine the level of acceptable risk and to prepare responses.

SPC Assesses Vulnerability of Tropical Fisheries to Climate Change [viewed]

7 November 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has released a publication titled “Vulnerability of Tropical Pacific Fisheries and Aquaculture to Climate Change," which includes contributions from 88 international scientists and fisheries specialists. The publication concludes that there will be winners and losers as a consequence of climate change in the Pacific region.

SPC, PIF Conduct Human Rights Training for Pacific Lawyers and Magistrates [viewed]

4 November 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community Regional Rights Resource Team (SPC/RRRT) in partnership with the Pacific Island Forum (PIF), conducted the 2011 Regional Human Rights Training Workshop for Lawyers and Magistrates, which focused on topics such as climate change and human rights, advocacy strategy and litigation on human rights.
