Moscow Meeting Adopts Declaration on Inclusion of International Civil Aviation in the EU-ETS (photo courtesy of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation)22 February 2012: A group of 23 countries meeting in Moscow, Russian Federation, adopted the Joint Declaration of the Moscow Meeting on Inclusion of International Civil Aviation in the EU-ETS, which outlines the participants' shared position that the EU and its Member States must cease application of the Directive 2008/101/EC to airlines and aircraft operators registered in third States. Under the Directive, international civil aviation was included in the EU-Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) as of 1 January 2012.

ESCAP, UNEP and ADB Release Asia-Pacific Green Growth Report [viewed]

16 February 2012: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have released a report asserting that the challenges of resource constraints in the Asia-Pacific region are more serious than anywhere else, and proposing strategies for changing economic incentives to promote a green economy. The report was prepared as part of preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

AOSIS Chair Identifies Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation as Main Challenges [viewed]

12 February 2012: In a welcome statement marking her start as Chair of the Bureau of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), Ambassador Marlene Moses of Nauru identified the Alliance's main challenge over the next few years as working with the international community to achieve climate change mitigation and adaptation. Moses, Nauru's Permanent Representative to the UN, became the AOSIS Chair in January 2012, succeeding Ambassador Dessima Williams of Grenada.

PIFS Announces PEC Funding for Home Solar Systems in the Solomon Islands [viewed]
