SPREP Reports on Robotic Sensors Deployment for Ocean Research [viewed]

June 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has announced that 13 ocean robots were deployed in equatorial waters near Kiribati to conduct ocean monitoring. The robots, automatic ocean sensors known as Argo floats, will enable scientists to monitor the ocean processes behind El Niño and La Niña events.

Global Climate Change Alliance Holds First Pacific Meeting [viewed]

5 June 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has reported that the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA): Pacific Small Island States project held its first regional steering committee meeting in Suva, Fiji, from 28–29 May 2012. GCCA is a global EU-supported initiative aimed at strengthening dialogue and cooperation on climate change in developing countries most vulnerable to climate change.

SPC Provides GIS Training for Monitoring Climate Change, Risks for Agriculture and Forestry [viewed]

1 June 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) convened a training session and consultation with Fiji's Ministry of Primary Industries, as well as agriculture and forestry personnel, on spatial information needs to inform decision making. The session covered information and best practices in applying Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to help identify and monitor climate change and disaster risks in the agriculture and forestry sectors.

UNESCO Releases Meeting Report on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development in SIDS [viewed]

UNESCO1 June 2012: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has released the report and recommendations of an experts meeting on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development in small island developing States (SIDS), which was held in Nassau, the Bahamas, from 21-23 September 2011. The meeting addressed the role of education in helping populations from the Caribbean, Pacific and Indian Oceans adapt to climate change.

SPC Announces Australian Funding for Climate Change Adaptation and Education in the Pacific [viewed]

28 May 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has reported on the signing of grant agreements worth AUD4.44 million with the Government of Australia. The funds will support climate change adaptation activities, as well as an education assessment aimed at improving numeracy and literacy.

Caribbean Experts Study Climate Change in Pacific Atoll Countries [viewed]

Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA)29 May 2012: Two Caribbean climate experts are visiting the central Pacific island of Kiribati to study and learn lessons from the climate challenges faced by atoll countries. The visit was arranged as part of the UN Development Programme's (UNDP) project on “South-South Cooperation between Pacific and Caribbean small island developing States (SIDS) on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management."
