Initiatives Announced to Double Clean Energy Research and Development [viewed]

cop2130 November 2015: Twenty major economies launched an initiative to double their investments in clean energy research and development (R&D), while a group of private major investors announced a coalition pledged to invest in early-stage development of technology coming out of the aforementioned initiative. iisdrs_cop2130 November 2015: Heads of State and Government attending the Leaders Event on the first day of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 21) addressed, inter alia: the inclusion of gender for ensuring climate justice; the importance of differentiation; the legal form of the agreement; the periodicity of the review process; transparency and accountability rules; whether or not to anchor loss and damage in a permanent mechanism; the role of natural capital accounting; the link between climate change and development; balancing mitigation and adaptation finance; technology transfer in providing mitigation support; and the need to address the degradation of forests, desertification, and biodiversity loss.

Fossil-Fuel Subsidy Reform Communiqué Presented to UNFCCC [viewed]

UNFCCC30 November 2015: At the opening of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, New Zealand's Prime Minster John Key presented the Fossil-Fuel Subsidy Reform Communiqué to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christina Figueres. The Communiqué, which calls on the international community to increase efforts to phase out subsidies for fossil fuel production and use, was endorsed by 40 governments and more than 100 businesses and international organizations.

APEC Ministers Commit to Implementing UN Goals, Address Energy Intensity [viewed]

apec19 November 2015: Ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries affirmed their commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on financing for development (AAAA) at the close of the 23rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting meeting. APEC leaders also adopted the APEC Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Framework to facilitate international cooperation cooperation on DRR.

November 2015 Sustainable Energy Finance Update [viewed]

November 2015 Sustainable Energy1 December 2015: During the month of November, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), among others, announced sustainable energy project funding and initiatives. AfDB, IDB and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) released reports on financing and deploying clean energy. A number of related events took place throughout the month.

Commonwealth Members Commit to Ambitious Legally-Binding Climate Agreement [viewed]

Niue Submits INDC [viewed]

niue25 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Niue has formally submitted its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 178. The submission expresses Niue's intent to achieve a 38% share of total electricity generation from renewable energy by 2020. Subject to additional international assistance, the country could accomplish 80% renewables by 2025, according to the INDC.

IEA, IPEEC Evaluate Energy Efficiency in Buildings of Major Economies [viewed]

iea_ipeec23 November 2015: The International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC) have co-published a report, titled 'Building Energy Performance Metrics: Supporting Energy Efficiency Progress in Major Economies,' which lays out the current state of energy performance in buildings over the period 2000-2012. The report finds that efficiency could save the equivalent of building energy use in China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the US combined annually.
