Organized by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), this meeting is for representatives of the Cook Islands, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The meeting will bring together GEF focal points, focal points from the main Conventions (Biodiversity, Desertification, Climate Change and POPs), representatives from civil society and representatives from the GEF Secretariat and Agencies.

Cook Islands Submits Renewable Energy NAMA [viewed]

17 January 2013: The Government of the Cook Islands has submitted a Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) seeking support for implementation to pursue the objective of achieving electricity 100% based on renewable sources by 2020. The proposal includes an implementation plan to generate 50% of its energy production from renewables by 2015, phasing out its current diesel generator-dominated system.

PIFS Releases 2012 Pacific Annual Progress Report, Reporting Annex [viewed]

PIFS25 January 2013: The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Tuiloma Neroni Slade, has released the Pacific Plan 2012 Annual Progress Report and its associated Reporting Annex. The documents highlight challenges faced by the region, and outline progress made towards greater regional integration and cooperation in various areas, including climate change, fisheries, gender equality and disability-inclusive development.

Event: Choiseul Integrated Climate Change Programme (CHICHAP) Workshop [viewed]

A joint inception and programme planning workshop will take place from 28-30 January 2013 for the Choiseul Integrated Climate Change Programme (CHICHAP), a pilot climate change programme for the Solomon Islands. The workshop will bring together over 100 participants from all sectors to learn more about this project, the partners involved as well as the results of the Choiseul climate change vulnerability and adaptation assessment. The workshop is intended to establish a steering committee and discuss the draft work programme. The workshop is hosted by Choiseul Provincial Government, with the assistance of several national ministries and development partners, including: the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the Pacific-Australia Climate Change Science and Adaptation Planning Programme, The Nature Conservancy and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

Ramsar Announces Mangrove Rehabilitation Project in the Marshall Islands [viewed]

16 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported on an upcoming mangrove rehabilitation and replanting project in two of the Marshall Islands' wetlands of international importance, Namdrik and Jaluit Atolls.
