Event: International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 edition of the International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2015) will be held under the theme 'Solutions for Change: Forging Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships towards 2030'. The two-day Forum will focus on creating cross-sectoral and multi-level partnerships to meet the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and climate change targets as one overarching goal. Plenary sessions will consider the development of the goals and targets for adoption of the post-2015 development agenda and for a 2015 climate change agreement, including ways to bridge the two processes. Parallel sessions will cover a range of related topics, from technology transfer and international scientific cooperation to waste management and the role of cities. The event is being co-organized by the UN University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).

New Zealand Submits INDC [viewed]

new-zealand7 July 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that New Zealand is the 46th Party to formally submit its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC), committing to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 30% below 2005 levels by 2030. According to the INDC, the target corresponds to a reduction of 11% from 1990 emissions, which will be used as the formal reference level.

IRENA Assesses Renewables Readiness of Fiji, Marshall Islands and Vanuatu [viewed]

IRENA2 July 2015: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has released Renewables Readiness Assessments (RRAs) for three small island developing States (SIDS): Fiji, the Marshall Islands and Vanuatu. The RRAs find that the three countries could meet their energy needs, expand energy access, decrease electricity costs and strengthen energy independence through a combination of renewable energy resources.

Final MDG Report: Gains, Shortfalls Point Way to Post-2015 Success [viewed]

milenium_goals_report6 July 2015: Extreme poverty was ended for more than one billion people through efforts under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), according to the final edition of the MDGs Report. The 2015 report highlights achievements in access to drinking water, universal primary education, child and maternal health, gender equality and eliminating hunger, among others. However, the report also underscores the need for more work as part of the post-2015 development agenda and the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure that the poorest and most vulnerable people are not left behind.

June 2015 Sustainable Energy Finance Update [viewed]

june20151 July 2015: During the month of June, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank announced funding for sustainable energy projects. AfDB, ADB, EBRD, the European Commission and the World Bank also released publications on financing and deploying clean energy.

ADB, AfDB, GCF, the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) launched publications.

UN-REDD Reports on 2014 Activities [viewed]

unreddJune 2015: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) released its 'Sixth Consolidated Annual Progress Report,' which covers the Programme's achievements in 2014. Overall, the report notes that in 2014, 56 countries participated as partner countries with US$47.8 million in funding allocated to activities in 2014.

ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment Highlights Financing Needs, Sendai Framework [viewed]

ecosoc-has19 June 2015: The 2015 Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a resolution encouraging UN Member States to support climate change adaptation and strengthen early warning systems, welcoming the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 and the holding of the first World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey, in May 2016. It also called for integrating work on development and humanitarian issues.

Multilateral Development Banks Report 19% Increase in Climate Finance [viewed]

mdbs-logos-pr-header16 June 2015: Six multilateral development banks (MDBs) have launched the fourth edition of their annual joint report on climate finance. The report finds that, in 2014, the MDBs committed more than US$28.35 billion in financing to developing countries and emerging economies, with US$23.28 billion dedicated to mitigation efforts, and US$5.07 billion to adaptation work.
