Japan, PIFS Support Integrated Solar Energy-Desalination Plant in Palau [viewed]

PIFSMarch 2014: A project to integrate solar energy and saltwater desalination has increased the supply of clean water eight-fold for 450 residents of the Palau state of Peleliu. The project, designed to demonstrate opportunities at the water-energy nexus, is administered through the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), with support from the Government of Japan through the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) Fund.

WMO Confirms 2013 as Sixth Warmest Year on Record [viewed]

WMO24 March 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released its annual climate statement, which confirms that 2013 tied with 2007 as the sixth warmest on record, continuing the long-term global warming trend, and highlights that 13 of the 14 warmest years on record have all occurred in the 21st century.

Event: 13th Meeting of the Cartagena Dialogue for Progressive Action [viewed]

The 13th meeting of countries participating in the Cartagena Dialogue for Progressive Action will be hosted by the Republic of the Marshall Islands, in Majuro. The Cartagena Dialogue for Progressive action, or Cartagena Dialogue, is an informal space “open to countries working towards an ambitious, comprehensive, and legally binding regime in the UNFCCC, and committed, domestically, to becoming or remaining low carbon economies.” The Dialogue aims to “discuss openly and constructively the reasoning behind each others' positions, exploring areas of convergence and potential areas of joint action.” The Cartagena Dialogue consists of around 30 participating countries, and it is one of the few groups within the UN climate negotiations that brings together negotiators from the global North and South.

UNFCCC Releases ADP Submissions from LDCs, AILAC and New Zealand [viewed]

UNFCCC17 March 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the submissions from Nepal, on behalf of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), New Zealand, and the Independent Association of Latin America and the Caribbean (AILAC), to the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP). The submissions will inform the work of the ADP at its June session and going forward toward a 2015 climate agreement.

Sustainable Energy FinanceFebruary 2014: Throughout the month of February, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) undertook a number of activities and approved funding for sustainable energy projects in a range of countries, including: Pakistan, India, Nepal, Turkey, Ukraine, Poland, Croatia, Brazil, and in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region.
