Event: Third Clean Energy Ministerial [viewed]

The Third Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM3) will bring together over 20 participating countries to discuss progress made by the 11 CEM clean energy initiatives, increased intergovernmental cooperation, and public-private partnerships in support of clean energy deployment. The CEM is an initiative of the Major Economies Forum (MEF), which was established in early 2009 to facilitate a positive outcome of climate change negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The 23 governments participating in CEM initiatives are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and the United States.

CEC Updates Online Database on Pollutant Releases and Transfers [viewed]

15 March 2012: The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has launched an updated version of "Taking Stock Online," its online resource on pollution data reported by industrial facilities in Canada, Mexico and the US. The updated database enables the tracking of the release and transfer of over 500 pollutants by nearly 100 industrial sectors across industries and national boundaries.

Event: Third Meeting of the ECPA Heavy Oil Working Group [viewed]

Natural Resources Canada is hosting the third meeting of the Heavy Oil Working Group, an initiative launched in April 2010 at the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) Ministerial in Washington, DC. This Group brings together regional partners from the Americas to share experiences with heavy oil, update on the current state of technology, and discuss other areas of mutual interest, such as environmental and policy issues involved with heavy oil development.

Event: PAIGH Roundtable on Climate Change in the Americas [viewed]

The Organization of American States (OAS) will host a scientific roundtable sponsored by the US National Section of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) on climate change and other Earth science issues in the Americas. Representatives from the OAS, PAIGH, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and other regional agencies will present their perspectives on climate change. PAIGH is a specialized agency of the OAS devoted to promoting hemispheric cooperation in the fields of geography, history, cartography and geophysics. The US National Section includes several US Government agencies, academic and scientific institutions, civil society and professional organizations.

Event: North America's Energy Future: Powering a Low-carbon Economy for 2030 and Beyond [viewed]

Organized by the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation's (CEC) Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC), this public forum will bring together experts to discuss, inter alia: progress made in fostering renewable electricity markets in Canada, Mexico and the US since the CEC's 2007 report on the subject, and its future through 2030; challenges and barriers affecting the use of renewable energy in North America; and how renewable energy projects can be promoted in remote communities.

Event: Workshop on Mexico's Experience in Strengthening Energy Efficiency [viewed]

Mexico's Energy Secretariat (SENER) and National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE), with support from the US State Department and the Organization of American States (OAS), are hosting a workshop geared toward promoting energy efficiency cooperation under the auspices of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), by sharing its own experiences in this field with other governments of the Americas. On the first day of the workshop, participants will be presented with best practices in energy efficiency policymaking and implementation. On the second day, participants will make technical visits to laboratories and institutions responsible for implementing some of Mexico's energy efficiency policies.

IDB and Alberta Undertake Joint Sustainable Energy Initiatives in Latin America [viewed]

IDB7 March 2012: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Alberta, Canada, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish initiatives and programs supporting sustainable energy in Latin America and the Caribbean in an effort to harness the benefits of international cooperation to mitigate the effects of climate change.

ITU Announces Winners of Green ICT Challenge [viewed]

6 March 2012: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Spanish company Telefonica have announced the winners of the Second Green Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Hackathon, where developers from all over the world competed to propose and develop a “Sustainable Energy for All” ICT application. The first prize went to a community bicycle application.
