UNFCCC's NAZCA Portal Features Over 500 City Actions [viewed]

nazca22 April 2015: To coincide with Earth Day, over 500 new city actions have been added to the Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal, which was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru, in December 2014. NAZCA, a UNFCCC-hosted website, showcases actions of non-state actors, including municipalities, regions and investors, and aims to help build momentum for a global climate agreement in Paris in December 2015. Currently, 400 cities, 71 subnational regions and 264 companies are taking 1514 climate-related actions listed on the NAZCA portal.

International Mother Earth Day Celebrated around the World [viewed]

ban_ki_moon_concert22 April 2015: In celebration of Earth Day, multilateral institutions and organizations worldwide held public concerts and forums, revealed a 'forest pavilion,' and released special newsletters and statements, among many other commemorative activities. The UN kicked off its Earth Day events with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon speaking at the Global Citizen Earth Day Concert on 18 April in Washington DC, US, where he told the crowd, "Take your passion and compassion and build a better, sustainable world."

Seventh Summit of the Americas Addresses Climate, Energy Access, SDGs [viewed]

vii_cumbre_de_las_americas12 April 2015: The Seventh Summit of the Americas met under the theme, ‘Prosperity with Equity: The Challenge of Cooperation in the Americas,' and discussed education, health, energy, environment, migration, security, citizen participation and democratic governance, among other topics. Addressing the Summit, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commended the region's contribution to defining the post-2015 development agenda and to discussions on climate-related issues. He noted that Caribbean countries have played a particularly significant role in placing climate issues on the global agenda.

G7 Germany15 April 2015: The G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting convened within the framework of Germany's G7 Presidency to address pressing international issues that impact global peace and security. The meeting resulted in the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting Communiqué, in which the Ministers describe climate change as one of the most serious challenges the world faces, threatening the environment, global security and economic prosperity, and potentially reversing progress made in tackling poverty.

Clean Energy Initiatives Announced at US-CARICOM Summit [viewed]

Event: Annual Commonwealth and Francophonie Dialogue with the G20 [viewed]

During the 2015 Annual Commonwealth and Francophonie Dialogue with the Group of 20 (G20), representatives will discuss: development priorities and actions during Turkey's 2015 G20 Presidency; inputs from Commonwealth and Francophonie developing countries on their development priorities and how the G20 could address them; delivering inclusive global value chains; domestic revenue mobilization and Base Erosion Profit Shifting; and maximizing the flow and reducing the costs of remittances. The Dialogue will be convened by the Secretariat of the Commonwealth, Secretariat of La Francophonie, and Turkey, as G20 President and Chair of the G20 Development Working Group (DWG).

Event: Open-Ended Consultations on UNECE Work on Sustainable Energy [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will hold Open-Ended Consultations on its sustainable energy work in preparation for the 24th session of its Committee on Sustainable Energy. Member States will gather to review implementation progress of the 2014-2015 programme of work. Topics to be discussed will address a range of issues facing energy, such as: cross-sectoral integration; cost-effective development of integrated electricity systems; smart integration of variable renewable resources into the energy mix; deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to mitigate the rise in coal use; guidelines for methane management; and implementation of the Hammamet Declaration. The Consultations' two-day agenda includes progress reports, keynote addresses on innovative thinking in energy and energy policy realities in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, and discussions on, inter alia, a strategic framework, the Paris Climate Change Conference, and a vision for the future and next steps. The Geneva Energy Conversations workshop on 'Scenarios for Sustainable Energy' will be held on 26 May 2015 and will inform the Open-Ended Consultations.

Event: Inaugural Caribbean Region Dialogue with the G20 [viewed]

The Group of 20 (G20) Development Working Group (DWG) will hold, for the first time, a regional dialogue with Caribbean countries on issues of mutual interest, including: G20 priorities and action during Turkey's 2015 Presidency with reflections and suggestions from a Caribbean perspective, especially as relates to development challenges in the Caribbean region; challenges and opportunities in developing the Caribbean Blue Economy; and strengthening resource mobilization for development and domestic mobilization in the Caribbean region in particular. The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago and Turkey, as G20 President and Chair of the DWG, are hosting the Caribbean Region Dialogue.
