14 February 2012: The organization RESOLVE has announced the election of representatives for civil society observers for the period 2012-2014 at the Climate Investment Funds (CIF).
11 February 2012: The Regional Policy Dialogue for Water and Climate Change Adaptation in the Americas, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and others, announced the "Prize for Actions on Water and Adaptation in the Americas."
6 February 2012: The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) has announced that the voting process is open to select observers for three "Southern" civil society organizations (CSOs) and one "Northern" CSO to attend the Participants Committee meetings of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), which is hosted at the World Bank.
18 January 2012: At the request of the parties in the dispute between Canada and Japan on Certain Measures Affecting the Renewable Energy Generation Sector (DS412), the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement panel has agreed to start its first substantive meeting with the parties and third parties with a session open to public viewing at WTO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
17 January 2012: The new chair of the Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation's (NAAEC) Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has issued a call for greater public involvement in CEC's work.
The US will host the 38th Summit of the Group of Eight (G8) at Camp David, Maryland, in May 2012. The G8 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the UK, and the US. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Chicago, back-to-back with the NATO summit, but the US announced the change in location and dates on 5 March (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/03/05/statement-press-secretary-g-8-and-nato-summits). The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold its summit in Chicago from 20-21 May (see http://www.chicagonato.org/ for more information). The Presidents Benin, Ghana and Tanzania and Prime Minister of Ethiopia are expected to join in the discussions on food security in Africa.
7 December 2011: A report by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) on the air emissions of electric power plants in North America finds that its 3,144 fossil fuel-burning plants generate the majority of several key pollutants and emit more greenhouse gases (GHG) than any other industrial sector.
9 December 2011: The 21st session of the Working Party on Regulatory Cooperation and Standardization Policies of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) included a session on "Standards and regulations: tool for promoting sustainable development."
15 December 2011: Experts from governments, international organizations, NGOs and industry participated in a panel on "Forests 2030: The future of forests in Europe and North America," in Geneva, Switzerland. The panel was chaired by Michael Zammit Cutajar, former UNFCCC Executive Secretary, under the patronage of Janusz Zaleski, Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Environment, Poland.
12 December 2011: The Government of Canada has announced its formal withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol. In a statement delivered in the Canadian House of Commons, Peter Kent, Canadian Minister for the Environment, stated that "we are invoking our legal right to formally withdraw from Kyoto. This decision formalizes what we have said since 2006 that we will not implement the Kyoto Protocol."
