Egypt, Pakistan Submit INDCs [viewed]

UNFCCC12 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Egypt and Pakistan have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 161. Egypt's INDC focuses largely on mitigation in the energy sector, especially through efficiency and alternative energy sources. Pakistan's INDC notes studies calculating the country's emissions projections are underway, which will allow the Party to make specific commitments.

Climate Vulnerable Forum Issues Manila Communiqué [viewed]

Climate Vulnerable Forum11 November 2015: A meeting of 43 countries vulnerable to climate change concluded with the adoption of a call to "enshrine the critical goal of below 1.5°C together with a successive 5-year commitment cycle" in the Paris climate change agreement. The 20-member Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) convened its Sherpa Senior Officers' Meeting, with participation by 23 incoming members, to take stock of progress and prepare a common position ahead of the Paris Climate Change Conference.

Event: Climate Change, Security and Defence [viewed]

This event will bring together leading global defence and security experts for a discussion 'Climate Change, Security and Defence,' as they explore the impact climate change is already having and will likely have on the future in regions—from the Arctic to sub-Saharan Africa and from the Middle East to South-East Asia. The event is hosted by the Conference Board of Canada. It brings together representatives from Norway, France, the European Union and Canada to stimulate a public debate about Canada's role in this international concern.

UNFCCC10 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Saudi Arabia and Sudan have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 159. Saudi Arabia's INDC indicates it will pursue economic diversification and adaptation with the aim of generating mitigation co-benefits. Sudan's INDC identifies objectives in the energy, forestry and waste sectors designed to guide the country toward low-carbon development.

UNISDR, Singapore to Strengthen Disaster Risk Management in SIDS [viewed]

UNISDR - Singapore Flag4 November 2015: Singapore and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) have joined forces to strengthen the disaster risk management (DRM) capacity of small island developing States (SIDS) and other countries that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. During a joint specialized training course, representatives from Singapore and UNISDR shared their expertise on early warning systems, hazard and vulnerability assessment, emergency preparedness plans, resilient public health systems, adaptation and mitigation measures, and sustainable urban planning.

The Ministerial Communiqué also stresses that "more needs to be done to bring CCS to the marketplace."

PA13 Hears Partner Updates, PMR Publishes Report on Carbon Leakage [viewed]

pmr30 October 2015: The 13th meeting of the Partnership Assembly (PA13) of the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) and accompanying workshops received updates on mitigation initiatives from around the world, including energy policy developments in Chile, the status of China's carbon market developments, the Norwegian Carbon Credit Procurement Program, and climate mitigation initiatives in Sri Lanka. PA13 also received updates from the UNFCCC on progress towards Paris and from the World Bank on its Carbon Pricing Initiatives and Transformative Carbon Asset Facility.

CEM Predicts Huge Growth in Off-Grid Appliance Market [viewed]

Clean Energy Ministerial29 October 2015: According to the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), the global market for off-grid appliances is expected to experience “rapid, significant growth," with consumer spending on off-grid fans, televisions and refrigerators increasing from US$525 million in 2015 to a possible US$4.7 billion in 2020. The research also highlights challenges that must be overcome in order for the market's potential to be fully realized, in regard to energy efficiency, finance, tariffs and taxes, distribution, consumer awareness and customer service.
