G20 Leaders Reaffirm Commitments to Climate, Sustainable Development, Clean Energy, Green Finance [viewed]

g20-20165 September 2016: As leaders from the Group of Twenty (G20) gathered for their 11th Summit in Hangzhou, China, on 4-5 September, there was no shortage of pressure from non-state actors for the Group to place climate change and related issues prominently on the agenda. The outcomes from the Summit indicate that these issues were central to many of the discussions, but the final commitments did not go as far as some had hoped.

Event: Adaptation Fund Climate Finance Readiness Workshop for MENA Countries [viewed]

A climate finance readiness workshop for countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, organized by the Adaptation Fund and co-sponsored by the Moroccan Agency for Development of Agriculture (ADA), will take place from 6-8 September, in Rabat, Morocco. Participants from more than a dozen MENA countries, including the Fund's accredited National, Regional and Multilateral Implementing Entities (NIEs, RIEs and MIEs), are expected to attend. The workshop will include presentations on: the Adaptation Fund's Direct Access modality, including examples of best practices in accreditation procedures and project development processes; the Fund's gender, environmental and social policies; and the Fund's Readiness Programme for Climate Finance. Participants will also discuss adaptation challenges and priorities for Morocco and the MENA region.

UNU25 August 2016: Inadequate infrastructure and weak logistic chains increase the risk that an extreme natural event, such as an earthquake or flood, will become a disaster, according to the 'WorldRiskReport 2016.' The report, published by the UN University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft – Gemeinsam für Menschen in Not e.V., analyzes the role of infrastructure and logistics in determining a country's disaster risk.

Event: World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2016 [viewed]

The third annual World Green Economy Summit (WGES) will focus on the theme, 'Driving the Global Green Economy'. The WGES is an initiative by the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority and is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President Prime Minister of UAE and The Ruler of Dubai and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, in cooperation with World Climate Ltd and WETEX. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) are institutional partners for WGES 2016. The programme will incorporate plenary sessions, breakout sessions and a expert-led presentations, addressing topics including: Green Finance; Solar Energy; Transforming cities through happy citizens; Post Paris Agreement on climate change / Road to UNFCCC COP22 in Marrakech; Thought Leadership for the Green Economy; and Public Private Partnerships.

2015 Climate Finance by MDBs at US$25 Billion [viewed]

2015_climate_finance9 August 2016: In 2015, six multilateral development banks (MDBs) jointly committed more than US$25 billion in climate finance. According to the '2015 Joint Report on Multilateral Development Banks' Climate Finance,' in addition, a total of US$55.7 billion were committed in co-finance, raising the total to US$80.8 billion. The sum committed in 2015 by the six MDBs represents an 11% drop compared to climate financing commitments in 2014, at US$28.3 billion, but is above 2013 levels (US$23.8 billion). The 2014 report (published in 2015) did not include data for co-financing.

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: Heat-Related Deaths to Increase, Children and the Poor Most Climate Vulnerable [viewed]

adaptation and loss update8 August 2016: As reports of new temperature extremes exceeding the 50°C mark continue to come in, further climate change-related concerns have been voiced by the UN community. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has expressed concern over a potential rise in deaths precipitated by heat. The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank have cautioned that children and the world's poor are among those disproportionately affected by climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and others have emphasized climate change impacts on food security. On the policy side, the Adaptation Committee (AC) and the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Expert Group (LEG) have issued a call for submissions from Parties and stakeholders on their Paris mandates.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) launched a guide to promote smart city management. These actions aim to contribute to SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable).

Multilateral Initiatives Advance Renewable Energy, Efficiency in the Caribbean, Asia [viewed]
