Update on Doha Amendment Ratification [viewed]

UNFCCC8 May 2015: Since the month of February, the UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Ecuador, Grenada, Liechtenstein, the Marshall Islands, Namibia, Palau and South Africa have accepted the Doha Amendment, which formalizes commitments for the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol (2013-2020). These announcements bring the total number of parties that have deposited their instruments of acceptance to 30.

ICAO Dialogues Focus on Market-Based Mechanism for Aviation Emissions [viewed]

Icao1 May 2015: Through a multi-regional outreach effort carried out in April 2015, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) connected with 35o stakeholders from 79 countries to discuss market-based mechanisms (MBMs) as a means of mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from international aviation. This first round of Global Aviation Dialogues (GLADs) on MBMs, involved two-day sessions in five regions, where participants heard updates on ICAO's development of a global MBM scheme and offered feedback.

Event: UNESCO Expert Meeting on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development in the Arab States [viewed]

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is hosting this meeting to explore the challenges that climate change is posing and will pose to education systems in the Arab region. Given the weather extremes that affect Arab countries, especially with the onset of climate change, UNESCO envisions a robust role for education in adaptation and mitigation. Recommendations formulated at the meeting will inform UNESCO's work in the region under its Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development.

Figueres calls on the G7 "to help orchestrate" the build-up of the US$100 billion in climate finance that the developed world has agreed to provide annually by 2020, and to contribute to the global framework that will "green capital at levels high enough to transform the economy."

MEF21 April 2015: The 21st meeting of the Leaders' Representatives of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) brought together ministers and officials from 15 major economies, as well as from Maldives, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Marshall Islands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Switzerland and Turkey. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the UNFCCC Secretariat and the UN Secretary-General's office, as well as the Co-Chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP).

IRENA, MIST Find Solar PV Cost-Competitive in the UAE [viewed]

renewable_energy_prospectsApril 2015: According to a study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), renewable energy, in particular electricity from solar photovoltaics (PV), has been cost-competitive in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 2014. Prepared as part of IRENA's REmap country study series, the report finds that increasing the share of renewable energy in the UAE's energy mix to 10% and electricity generation mix to 25% by 2030 could generate annual net savings of at least US$1.9 billion.
