At Learning Event, HLPF Participants Share Experiences in SDG Implementation [viewed]

The event, which took place alongside the 2016 session of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) aimed to provide a strategic vision and practical knowledge on how to find sustainable, effective solutions for communities.

UNEP Inquiry Highlights Green Finance in 13 Developing Countries [viewed]

UNEP Logo18 July 2016: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System has published a report highlighting the diverse experiences of 13 developing countries in directing finance toward sustainable development aims. Launching the report to coincide with the 2016 session of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), UNEP emphasized the need for financing at the level of US$5-7 trillion each year to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Event: MedCOP Climate 2016 [viewed]

MedCOP Climate 2016 will be held in advance of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 22), and aims to: contribute to international efforts to fight climate change from a regional perspective; act as a platform for dialogue and consultation among stakeholders across the Mediterranean region; strengthen solidarity among stakeholders; and determine best practices and innovative mechanisms for changing individual and collective behaviors. The meeting will bring together approximately 2000 representatives from 22 Mediterranean countries, the private sector, civil society, and regional and international organizations to: highlight existing climate initiatives in the region; formulate innovative ideas through local, national and regional networks; enable stakeholders to present and discuss the development of their projects; and raise awareness regarding the benefits of and need for climate action in the Mediterranean region. MedCOP 2016 also aims to: monitor commitments approved during the first MedCOP, held in Marseille, France, in June 2015; affirm the relevance of the Mediterranean dimension in combating climate change; and prepare a Mediterranean action plan, enabling the implementation of a mitigation and adaptation roadmap. The conference is organized by the Government of Morocco, the Union for the Mediterranean, and the COP 21 and COP 22 Presidencies, among others. The MedCOP convenes every year in advance of the UNFCCC COP.

In FY16, World Bank Provides Over US$61 Billion [viewed]

world_bank_new12 July 2016: The World Bank Group's (World Bank) commitments rose to over US$61 billion in loans, grants, equity investments and guarantees to countries and private businesses in fiscal year 2016 (FY16), according to a World Bank press release. This financing includes support for climate change and a continued focus on sub-Saharan Africa, which remains a top priority with commitments to countries reaching US$12.5 billion in FY16.

The event was globally televised live by Al Jazeera Media Network. Ten of the 12 current candidates participated, discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the UN, and taking questions from UN Member States and the public, both from the floor and via video.

Petersberg Climate Dialogue VII Builds Momentum toward Paris Agreement Implementation [viewed]

germany_morocco5 July 2016: During the seventh Petersberg Climate Dialogue, themed 'Making the Paris Agreement a Reality,' the 35 countries in attendance focused on swift implementation of the Paris Agreement. The German hosts announced a global partnership to support the implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and indicated their intent to conclude the steps in the German ratification process before the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 22) in November 2016.

Sustainable Energy Finance Update: World Bank and India Team Up on Solar, US$1 Billion Pledged for Sustainable Energy in Pacific [viewed]

However, with wind and solar costs anticipated to dip relatively lower, the Outlook assures that a fundamental transformation toward renewables is still in the works, with US$7.8 trillion in clean energy investments projected from 2016-2040.
