8 December 2010: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN's (FAO) Regional Conference for the Near East held its 30th session in Khartoum, Sudan, from 4-8 December 2010.
12 December 2010: The second meeting of the Japan-Arab Economic Forum was held in Tunis, Tunisia, on 11 December 2010, on the basis of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Japan and the League of Arab States.
28 October 2010: The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) considered agriculture development and food security when it met in New York, US, on 28 October 2010.
22 October 2010: The Greek Government, with the support of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and in collaboration with leaders from across the Mediterranean, launched the Mediterranean Climate Change Initiative on 22 October 2010, in Athens, Greece.
October 2010: The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) celebrated the 50th anniversary of its creation by making reference to its achievements, including sustainable development.
4 October 2010: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced the launch of its "Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready" campaign, in the Arab region, at the General Assembly meeting of the Arab Towns Organization.
5 October 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has completed its scheduled regional consultations for GEO-5. The consultations were convened in Washington DC, US (September 2), Panama City, Panama (September 6-7), Ottawa, Canada (September 9), Bangkok, Thailand (September 16-17), Nairobi, Kenya (September 20-21), Geneva, Switzerland (September 23-24) and Bahrain (October 4-5).
The aim of the consultations is to agree on priority environmental issues/challenges and their related internationally agreed goals. Discussions will also be held on the development of the regional chapters and on the GEO-5 process.
August 2010: The latest issue of FAO's Silva Mediterranea focuses on the prevention of forest fires in the Mediterranean region in a changing climate.
This lauching event is organized by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) and the Environment Center for Arab Towns. It aims at improving cooperation to jointly implement initiatives to support the countries of the region, through supporting scientific and technical cooperation, communication and advocacy, co-organizing regional events and preparation of regional reports.
