11 January 2012: In his remarks at the Group of 77 chairmanship handover ceremony in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the importance of the leadership of the G77 in ensuring that "concrete actionable measures" are adopted at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
The Group of 77 (G77) will mark the handover of its chairmanship, from Argentina to Algeria, on 11 January 2012, at UN Headquarters in New York, US.
10 December 2011: Speaking at a youth event preceding the fourth annual forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations in Doha, Qatar, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on young people to help combat the multiple threats faced by the planet, such as climate change and environmental destruction, as well as water, food and energy scarcity.
28 November 2011: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) designated national authorities (DNAs) of Spain, Saudi Arabia, Côte d'Ivoire and Colombia have been announced as the winners of the 2011 DNA Communicators of the Year Showcase. The showcase was launched in 2010 to share and recognize DNAs' work in promoting the CDM in their countries.
November 2011: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the European Commission (EU) and the Government of Germany (BMU), is implementing the EU-UNDP Low Emission Capacity Building Programme in 14 countries. The initiative aims to strengthen technical and institutional capacities at the country level and facilitate the integration of public and private sector activities to address climate change.
24 November 2011: Accompanying the publication of the International Energy Agency's (IEA) new book “Deploying Renewables 2011: Best and Future Policy,” the IEA has released three Information Papers on various aspects of renewables deployment.
22 November 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published and addendum (FCCC/AWGLCA/2011/MISC.6/Add.5) consisting of 12 further submissions from parties on views on the items relating to a work programme for development of modalities and guidelines listed in decision 1/CP. 16 paragraph 46 (nationally appropriate mitigation commitments or actions by developed country parties).
18 November 2011: The International Conference on Adaptation to Climate Change and Food Security in West and North Africa addressed concerns over the sustainability of agriculture production systems in the region, noting the importance of agriculture for local livelihoods and the poor, as well as concerns over water scarcity.
14 November 2011: On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), a high-level celebration was hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), and the ITPGR Secretariat released the list of new projects to be funded under the Treaty's Benefit-sharing Fund, to support farmers and breeders to adapt key crops to climate change.
This workshop aims to address critical food security and livelihood challenges in West Asia and North African (WANA) countries and has the specific objectives to: provide a better understanding and assessment of the climate change impacts on agriculture and the associated vulnerability in the WANA region; discuss and develop informed decisions on practical adaptation strategies for the agricultural sector in the WANA region; discuss and suggest the appropriate ways to promote adaptation planning and implementation and its integration into the sustainable development planning in different countries in the WANA region; and develop a Regional Adaptation Framework for continuous information exchange on climate change impacts and adaptation amongst the different countries in the WANA region. The meeting is being co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Association of Agricultural Research Institutions in the Near East and North Africa, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), and others. ICARDA is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
