7 October 2010: The UN-REDD Programme held a consultation workshop with representatives of civil society organizations and indigenous peoples from Latin American and the Caribbean to facilitate the development of guidance on free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) and recourse mechanisms for national UN-REDD activities.
The regional workshop on “Climate Change: Corporate Responsibility and Market Mechanisms” will bring together experts from financial markets, corporate environmental responsibility and carbon markets to discuss experiences and opportunities for the private sector in these areas. This event is co-organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange (BM&F BOVESPA) and the World Bank.
The regional workshop on environmental sustainability and carbon markets will address challenges and opportunities for the financial sector in Latin America and the Caribbean and provide information for the identification of business opportunities. The workshop seeks to demonstrate that financial enterprises that adopt environmental strategies may gain competitive advantages.
The fifth ministerial meeting on climate change of Brazil, South Africa, India and China (BASIC) will be held in Tianjin, China, from 10-11 October 2010.
This consultation with indigenous peoples' representatives and civil society organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean is convened by the UN-REDD Programme to facilitate the development of guidance on free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) and recourse mechanisms for national UN-REDD activities.
5 October 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has completed its scheduled regional consultations for GEO-5. The consultations were convened in Washington DC, US (September 2), Panama City, Panama (September 6-7), Ottawa, Canada (September 9), Bangkok, Thailand (September 16-17), Nairobi, Kenya (September 20-21), Geneva, Switzerland (September 23-24) and Bahrain (October 4-5).
September 2010: At the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) South American Regional Association meeting in Bogota, Colombia, delegates from 13 South American countries agreed on the need for efforts to provide better meteorological and hydrological services in the region.
30 September 2010: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published several documents for consideration by the 33rd session of Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), which will take place in Cancun, Mexico, from 30 November-4 December 2010.
28 September 2010: The Director of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States Observatory on Migration, Laurent de Boeck, stated that improved management of South-South migration can contribute positively to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
29 September 2010: An Energy Efficiency and Access Forum, which was jointly organized by the Mexican Government, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank, highlighted that Latin America's power generating capacity may need to double over the next 20 years to meet the growing demand for electricity.
