UNEP2 August 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced the five winners of the World Environment Day (WED) Challenge 2012. UNEP announced winners from Kenya, Colombia, Australia, India and Bangladesh, who will each win a fuel-efficient car.

IOC-UNESCO Calls for Proposals on Sea-Level Stations in the Caribbean [viewed]

UNESCO IOC1 August 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has issued a call for proposals regarding the acquisition, installation and maintenance/leveling visits of tide gauge equipment over a one-year period in the Caribbean. The call is issued as part of the IOC-UNESCO's mandate to coordinate implementation of the Tsunami and other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean Sea and Adjacent Regions (CARIBE EWS).

UNFCCC Holds Expert Meeting on Loss and Damage in LAC [viewed]

UNFCCC27 July 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat organized a regional expert meeting to discuss the full range of approaches and tools to address the risks of loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change and the relative cost-effectiveness of these. The meeting focused on the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, and included discussion of impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events.

Colombia and Stanford University Partner on Forest Carbon Monitoring in the Amazon [viewed]

25 July 2012: The Government of Colombia and Stanford University's Carnegie Institution have demonstrated the ability to measure carbon stocks using a combination of airborne Light Detection and Ranging technology (LiDAR) and a satellite image analysis technology called CLASlite to produce carbon maps. The technology aims to contribute to operationalize REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable use of forests and enhancement of carbon stock).

CEC Ministerial Meeting Updates Submission on Enforcement Matters Process [viewed]

11 July 2012: The Council of the North American Commission on Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has adopted new guidelines for submissions regarding the CEC's public Submission on Enforcement Matters (SEM) process, and instructed the CEC Secretariat to undertake new initiatives, including on short-lived climate forcers (SLCFs), e-waste and clean energy.
