Event: International Conference on Agriculture and Environment [viewed]

This conference is organized around the theme "Agricultural Production and Economic Growth in Harmony with the Environment: A Shared Vision in the Context of Climate Change." It will be hosted by the Honduran Government and Zamorano University, with support from the Inter-American Institute on Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD), the Central American Commission on Agriculture (CAC), and several international organizations related to agriculture. The conference is intended to help prepare the eight Member States of the Central American Integration System (SICA) for negotiations on issues related to food, biomass and other agricultural production in upcoming global talks on biodiversity, biosafety and climate change, as well as the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20).

Event: Third Clean Energy Ministerial [viewed]

The Third Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM3) will bring together over 20 participating countries to discuss progress made by the 11 CEM clean energy initiatives, increased intergovernmental cooperation, and public-private partnerships in support of clean energy deployment. The CEM is an initiative of the Major Economies Forum (MEF), which was established in early 2009 to facilitate a positive outcome of climate change negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The 23 governments participating in CEM initiatives are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and the United States.

CEC Updates Online Database on Pollutant Releases and Transfers [viewed]

15 March 2012: The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has launched an updated version of "Taking Stock Online," its online resource on pollution data reported by industrial facilities in Canada, Mexico and the US. The updated database enables the tracking of the release and transfer of over 500 pollutants by nearly 100 industrial sectors across industries and national boundaries.

FAO-RLC Offers Chile Drought Recommendations [viewed]

FAO12 March 2012: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (FAO-RLC) offered a set of recommendations to Chile on how to address drought and other extreme weather events that are predicted to increase as a result of climate change.

Event: Third Meeting of the ECPA Heavy Oil Working Group [viewed]

Natural Resources Canada is hosting the third meeting of the Heavy Oil Working Group, an initiative launched in April 2010 at the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) Ministerial in Washington, DC. This Group brings together regional partners from the Americas to share experiences with heavy oil, update on the current state of technology, and discuss other areas of mutual interest, such as environmental and policy issues involved with heavy oil development.

IICA to Provide Input on Climate Change and Agriculture [viewed]

7 March 2012: Responding to a direct appeal from the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) will provide input on agriculture and climate change to the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC, to be held at the end of 2012.

Event: PAIGH Roundtable on Climate Change in the Americas [viewed]

The Organization of American States (OAS) will host a scientific roundtable sponsored by the US National Section of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) on climate change and other Earth science issues in the Americas. Representatives from the OAS, PAIGH, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and other regional agencies will present their perspectives on climate change. PAIGH is a specialized agency of the OAS devoted to promoting hemispheric cooperation in the fields of geography, history, cartography and geophysics. The US National Section includes several US Government agencies, academic and scientific institutions, civil society and professional organizations.

UN-HABITAT, EU Launch Low-Emission City Growth Initiative [viewed]

9 March 2012: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the European Commission (EC) have launched a project, titled "Promoting Low Emission Urban Development Strategies in Emerging Economy Countries" (URBAN-LEDS), which aims to support cities' efforts in mitigating climate change.

CARICOM Heads of Government Approve Climate-Resilient Development Plan, Agree to Hold Pre-Rio+20 Meeting on SIDS Issues [viewed]

CARICOM8 March 2012: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government have approved an implementation plan for its Regional Framework for Achieving Development Resilient to Climate Change, and have agreed to hold a special meeting prior to the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) that will seek to ensure that small island developing State (SIDS) concerns are fully acknowledged in the Rio+20 outcome.
