IRENA Assembly Focuses on Accelerating Renewable Energy Transition [viewed]

IRENA17 January 2016: The sixth session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly focused on accelerating the transition to renewable energy, in particular, by mobilizing investment. More than 1,000 officials and other stakeholders from over 150 countries convened in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), from 16-17 January 2016 to provide strategic and programmatic direction to the agency. In addition, IRENA launched a report on the economic benefits of renewable energy and announced funding for four renewable energy projects in Antigua and Barbuda, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde and Senegal.

GFFA 2016 Highlights Agriculture and Food Security for SDGs, Climate [viewed]

gffa16 January 2016: The 2016 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) resulted in a Communiqué from the agriculture ministers of 65 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The ministers call for ensuring food security for cities and rural areas through: sustainable, productive and profitable agriculture; efficient, reliable supply and value chains; and vibrant rural areas.

CEC Publishes Common Methodology for Black Carbon Inventories [viewed]

CEC15 January 2016: A report released by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) recommends common guidelines for better estimating black carbon emissions from key sources, thereby facilitating North American cross-border comparisons and mitigation assessments of black carbon emission inventories. The publication supports efforts to establish accurate baselines and reduction priorities across Canada, Mexico and the US.

Event: Global Aviation Dialogues: Americas Region [viewed]

This Americas regional meeting will take place in Mexico to discuss progress regarding the work of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on a global market-based mechanism (MBM) scheme. It is one of several regional meetings forming the second round of Global Aviation Dialogues (GLADs), which will take place during the period from 20 March to 8 April 2016 at five venues across the ICAO regions. GLADs aim to ensure the full engagement of States and other stakeholders on a global MBM scheme for international aviation and to facilitate information exchange. ICAO is developing a global MBM as part of a basket of measures for addressing the contribution of international aviation to climate change.

Event: High-Level Ministerial Meeting on the Implementation Sendai Framework 2015-2030 (Americas) [viewed]

This meeting will discuss the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 and define regional priorities for its implementation in the Americas. Recommendations emanating from the meeting will provide the basis for further discussion and analysis with a broader range of stakeholders in the framework of the Regional Platform for DRR 2016. The meeting is being organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Regional Office for the Americas (UNISDR AM).

Thailand Takes Over as G-77 Chair for 2016 [viewed]

December 2015 Climate Finance Update21 December 2015: During the month of December, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the World Bank, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Adaptation Fund and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), among others, reported on new financing pledges and other climate finance news. Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), climate funds and UN initiatives launched studies, reports and briefs on, inter alia, climate risks and resilience, and adaptation finance. A large number of climate finance-related side events were held during the UN Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015.
