Switzerland and Peru Collaborate on GFCS Climate Project [viewed]

WMO30 October 2012: Peru and Switzerland have formed a partnership under the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) to conduct the "Climatic Services with Emphasis on the Andes in Support of Decision-making" (CLIMANDES) project. The project was announced during the World Meteorological Congress Extraordinary Session on the GFCS held from 29-31 October 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland.

UNFCCC Releases Report on Regional Expert Meetings on Loss and Damage [viewed]

UNFCCC19 November 2012: The UNFCCC has released a report on the regional expert meetings on a range of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events (FCCC/SBI/2012/29). The report summarizes regional level meetings in Ethiopia, Mexico and Thailand and one meeting on small island developing States (SIDS) in Barbados.

IDB Provides US$15 Million for Climate Change Mitigation in Mexico [viewed]

IDB15 November 2012: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), as the implementing partner for the Forest Investment Program (FIP), will provide US$15 million in financial and technical assistance to Mexico to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through reducing deforestation in five of the Mexican states with the greatest forest loss.

Event: Transforming Transportation 2013 [viewed]

The World Bank and the World Resources Institute's (WRI) sustainable transport center, EMBARQ, will co-host the 10th annual "Transforming Transportation" event on sustainable transport. The 2013 agenda will discuss, inter alia: capitalizing on the multilateral development banks' $175 billion commitment for sustainable transport made during Rio+20; opportunities for sustainable transport in China, India and Latin America; integrating urban transport and development; improving transport health and safety in cities; and bringing shared bicycle solutions to scale in developing countries.

5,000th CDM Project will Produce 74,200MWh of Wind Energy in the Dominican Republic [viewed]

UNFCCC15 November 2012: The Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has reached a new milestone with the registration of its 5,000th project. In total, the CDM has registered projects in 81 developing countries worldwide, including solar power projects that replace fossil fuels, and projects that substitute inefficient wood stoves and industrial projects that destroy greenhouse gases (GHG).

GEF Council Approves Work Program with Ten Climate Change Projects/Programs [viewed]

15 November 2012: The 43rd Meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council adopted a Work Program that amounts to US$174 million and benefits 63 countries. Ten of the projects and programs approved focus on climate change.

UNU-INWEH Outlines Policy Recommendations for Sustainable Mangrove Management [viewed]

15 November 2012: The UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) has published a policy brief titled “Securing the Future of Mangroves.” The brief is based on the World Atlas of Mangroves and describes both the current status of mangroves, including their economic value, as well as threats to mangrove ecosystems and considerations for good management practices.
