Event: Regional Workshop: Sharing Experiences in the Management of Transboundary Basins [viewed]

Representatives of the eight member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) -- Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela -- will meet to exchange best practices and lessons learned in the management of transboundary basins, which will serve as inputs to the implementation of the ACTO/UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/Global Environment Facility (GEF) project on "Regional Integrated and Sustainable Management of Transboundary Water Resources in the Amazon River Basin Considering Climate Variability and Climate Change". The workshop will be followed by the second meeting of the project's Steering Committee will review project activities and approve project management instruments for 2013.

Regional Platform for DRR in the Americas Adopts Declaration [viewed]

29 November 2012: The Third Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas has adopted a "Communiqué of Santiago: Investing for Resilience," which calls for stepping up efforts to fully implement mechanisms and key actions to accelerate implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) for disaster risk reduction (DRR).

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Submission from Group of Parties on Shared Vision [viewed]

UNFCCC29 November 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a conference room paper containing a submission to the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-Term Cooperative Action (AWG LCA) from 20 countries. The submission refers to a shared vision for long-term cooperative action, including a long-term global goal for emission reductions, in accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities (CBDR).

UNU-EHS, CARE Profile Climate-Induced Migration [viewed]

28 November 2012: The UN University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and CARE International have released a comparative study identifying food insecurity and rainfall variability as key drivers of human mobility. The study is based on empirical research in Bangladesh, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Peru, Tanzania, Thailand and Viet Nam.

November 2012: The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV (Measuring, Reporting and Verification) has released the second edition of its quarterly Mitigation Newsletter. The October 2012 newsletter features the Partnership's first Autumn School on MRV, as well as a review of capacity-building workshops in Chile, Thailand and Costa Rica.

Event: International Seminar: Watershed Management and Climate Change [viewed]

The governments of the Colombian municipality of Neiva and Department of Huila, with support from Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (RLC) of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will discuss watershed management in the face of climate change. The seminar will examine integrated watershed management as an approach to conserve water, soil and biodiversity resources, while supporting and improving local livelihoods and promoting sustainable development at the basin and national levels. The seminar specifically will discuss: public policies; financial tools, including payment for environmental services; techniques, bioengineering approaches and traditional knowledge regarding water stewardship, soil conservation and erosion control; and successful case studies from Colombia and the rest of Latin America.

IICA, GIZ Help Costa Rica Prepare NAMAs for Coffee, Waste and Public Transport Sectors [viewed]

23 November 2012: The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Germany's international cooperation agency (GIZ) and Costa Rica's Environment Ministry (MINAET) are assisting that country's coffee, solid waste management and public transport sectors in preparing Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMAs) for their sectors to gain financing for reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
