5 September 2011: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$10.5 million project to establish a system of Verified Emissions Reductions (VERs) in Colombia, with the aim of cutting over half a million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over four years through a voluntary trading system.

The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing this international expert meeting, with participants primarily from small island developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, representing national education representatives, curriculum development experts, representatives of school and education networks, scientists and climate change experts, representatives of multilateral agencies and civil society. The conference will focus on the challenges climate change poses to education systems in SIDS, and on promoting education to enhance adaptation to climate change in the context of sustainable development. The meeting will develop a road map and recommendations to serve as a contribution to UNFCCC COP 17, the UNCSD and the End-of-Decade Conference of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

25 August 2011: The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has reported that it is developing a Mesoamerican scientific-technical network on climate change and agriculture aimed at developing a regional strategy for adapting agriculture to climate variability.
