5 September 2011: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$10.5 million project to establish a system of Verified Emissions Reductions (VERs) in Colombia, with the aim of cutting over half a million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over four years through a voluntary trading system.
At the Eighth BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change, Ministers welcomed the offer of China to host the Ninth BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change on 31 October-1 November. A meeting of experts will be held alongside this Ministerial meeting.
The Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Meeting Preparatory to the 10th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will take place in Mexico City, Mexico.
30 August 2011: The 14th issue of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) News Update features articles about the forthcoming climate change talks in Durban, South Africa, deforestation in Brazil, and a World Bank/Global Environment Facility (GEF) investment to protect marine ecosystems in the eastern Caribbean.
The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing this international expert meeting, with participants primarily from small island developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, representing national education representatives, curriculum development experts, representatives of school and education networks, scientists and climate change experts, representatives of multilateral agencies and civil society. The conference will focus on the challenges climate change poses to education systems in SIDS, and on promoting education to enhance adaptation to climate change in the context of sustainable development. The meeting will develop a road map and recommendations to serve as a contribution to UNFCCC COP 17, the UNCSD and the End-of-Decade Conference of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
24 August 2011: During World Water Week, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) called for increased investments in disaster-resilient infrastructure as well as smarter water management to avoid drought, floods and other water-related disasters, particularly in urban areas.
23 August 2011: The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize their growing collaboration in assisting Caribbean countries to develop climate change adaptation strategies.
The Sixth Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACF) will discuss the future of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and prospects for carbon projects in Latin America. The Forum is co-organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications of Costa Rica, the World Bank Institute (WBI), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
25 August 2011: The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has reported that it is developing a Mesoamerican scientific-technical network on climate change and agriculture aimed at developing a regional strategy for adapting agriculture to climate variability. IICA is a specialized affiliate of the Organization of American States (OAS).
17 August 2011: The Secretaries-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Central American Integration System (SICA) have agreed to strengthen the institutional relationship between their two Secretariats.
