UNFCCC Publishes Mitigation Submissions from Parties [viewed]

30 March 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published seven submissions from parties (FCCC/AWGLCA/2011/MISC.6) on views on the issues relating to the a work programme for the development of modalities and guidelines listed in decisions 1/CP.16, paragraph 46, including with respect to the initial scheduling of the processes described in chapter III.A (Enhanced action on mitigation. Nationally appropriate mitigation commitments or actions (NAMAs) by developed country Parties) of the decision.

Event: GEF Central America Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) [viewed]

The ECW will bring together GEF focal points from Central American countries, focal points from the main Conventions (Biodiversity, Desertification, Climate Change and POPs), representatives from civil society and representatives from GEF agencies. The purpose of the meeting is to keep these stakeholders abreast of GEF strategies, policies and procedures and to encourage coordination.

ECLAC and FAO Organize Policy Dialogue on Biofuel Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean [viewed]

29 March 2011: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) organized a policy dialogue on "Institutional Development and Innovation in Biofuels in Latin America and the Caribbean," where three papers were presented on the future of biofuels in the region.

Event: Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum 2011 (CREF) [viewed]

This annual event is co-sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IBD), Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Organization of America States (OAS), among others. Participants will look at policy and regulatory issues and the forces driving finance and investment in renewable energy sources in the Caribbean context, and the scope for a regional approach.

IDB Annual Meeting Discusses Growth Strategies for Latin America [viewed]

28 March 2011: The Annual Meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Board of Governors was held in Calgary, Canada, from 25-28 March 2011, and featured panels on sustainable cities and the future of oil in a carbon-conscious world.

Event: Regional Critical Energy Issues Dialogue [viewed]

This senior-level meeting coordinated by the Organization of American States (OAS) will discuss Latin America and the Caribbean's (LAC) critical energy and climate issues. Participants will also take stock of initiatives under the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) and plan for the region's Energy and Climate Ministerial to be hosted by Colombia in April 2012. Among the topics slated for discussion are energy efficiency, land use and forestry, climate change/adaptation, cleaner fossil fuels and accelerating clean energy deployment in LAC.

Event: Sustainable Transport and Air Quality Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean 2011 [viewed]

This Conference is co-sponsored by the Clean Air Institute (CAI), the Spanish Fund for Latin America & the Caribbean (SFLAC), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, GIZ and the City of Rosario, Governments of Brazil, Mexico and Spain. Participants will discuss “How to Achieve Sustainable Urban Transport?” Among other things, the Conference will examine health and environmental benefits of improving urban transport, emissions inventories and monitoring, use of alternative fuels, carbon financing to improve urban transport, and regional collaborative initiatives in Latin America & the Caribbean. The main conference will be held on 11-13 May. The Conference will be preceded on 9-10 May by training courses organized with the collaboration of GIZ. On 10 May, a high-level meeting will take place with transport and environment authorities, specialists and key stakeholders from leader cities that are transitioning to sustainable transportation, to discuss and advance a regional agenda, and provide technical and political inputs for regional and global transport and climate negotiations.
