The UN Environment Programme estimates that annually, one million people die prematurely around the World by being exposed to high levels of urban air pollution; this number represents about 114 premature deaths worldwide per hour. In Latin America, conservative estimates indicate that 35,000 people die prematurely annually from this exposure. All these deaths can and should be avoided.

CCAFS Releases Study on Hotspots of Vulnerability to Climate-Induced Food Insecurity [viewed]

5 June 2011: The Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has released a study that identifies hotspots of climate-induced food insecurity. The study combines data from food insecure regions with models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to measure vulnerability based on exposure and sensitivity to climate change and coping capacity.

Rainforest Basins Summit Calls for South-South Cooperation [viewed]

3 June 2011: The Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Three Rainforest Basins, namely the Amazon, Congo, and Borneo-Mekong basins, took place in Brazzaville, Congo, from 27 May-3 June 2011, to establish new ways to increase technical cooperation on forest matters, and adopted a joint statement on tropical forests, climate and sustainable development.
