Event: International Seminar on Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change [viewed]

The Inter-American Institute for Agricultural Cooperation (IICA) and the Government of Mexico will cohost an international seminar on adapting agriculture to climate change. IICA is a specialized affiliate of the Organization of American States (OAS) based in San José, Costa Rica. The Seminar will serve as the first event and formal launch of IICA's new Intergovernmental Programme for Cooperation on Climate Change - Opportunities and Challenges in Agriculture (PRICA-ADO) that brings together Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama to tackle adaptation issues affecting the subregion's agricultural sector.

IDB, Mexico Launch Sustainable Energy Technologies Contest [viewed]

IDB7 September 2011: Mexico and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea, have announced a joint contest to fund applied research and technological development projects on sustainable energy, with a total prize of US$2.5 million.

Event: Caribbean Regional Writeshop to Support Developing Country Publications on Adaptation to Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the University of the West Indies are calling for applications from young scholars, practitioners, policymakers and others from the Caribbean who are working in the field of climate change and disaster risk reduction to participate in a Writeshop. Through the Writeshop, participants are expected to produce a peer-review, publishable quality article and they will gain enhanced awareness of the process of writing papers for academic journals. These skills will allow their work to be eligible for incorporation into publications of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other high-level scientific bodies and consequently inform policy making on key issues of risk and climate.

IDB Fund Invests in Renewable Energy in Chile [viewed]

IDB6 September 2011: The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), part of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), will invest up to US$5 million in the Chilean Renovarum Renewable Energy Fund, a project that invests in low-carbon and climate-friendly technologies.

IDB to Support Establishment of Voluntary Carbon Market in Colombia [viewed]

IDB5 September 2011: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$10.5 million project to establish a system of Verified Emissions Reductions (VERs) in Colombia, with the aim of cutting over half a million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over four years through a voluntary trading system.

At the Eighth BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change, Ministers welcomed the offer of China to host the Ninth BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change on 31 October-1 November. A meeting of experts will be held alongside this Ministerial meeting.

Event: Experts Meeting on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development and Adaptation in SIDS [viewed]

The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing this international expert meeting, with participants primarily from small island developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, representing national education representatives, curriculum development experts, representatives of school and education networks, scientists and climate change experts, representatives of multilateral agencies and civil society. The conference will focus on the challenges climate change poses to education systems in SIDS, and on promoting education to enhance adaptation to climate change in the context of sustainable development. The meeting will develop a road map and recommendations to serve as a contribution to UNFCCC COP 17, the UNCSD and the End-of-Decade Conference of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

UN/ISDR Calls for Smarter Water Management to Reduce Disaster Risks [viewed]
