Coffee Gene Sequencing Project Supports Climate Adaptation [viewed]

idb-fontagro11 September 2014: The complete sequence of the coffee genome has been released into the public domain in an attempt to accelerate plant variety selection in the face of climate change and to meet growers' specific needs. The genetic information of the Coffea arabica and Coffea eugenioides species, containing the location and characterization of more than 30,000 genes, was presented during the Conference of the Association for Science and Information on Coffee (ASIC), held 8-13 September in Armenia, Colombia.

Event: First Carbon-CAP Stakeholder Workshop [viewed]

The first stakeholder workshop of the Carbon-CAP project will focus on the theme of 'The Role of Consumption-based Emissions in Climate Policy,' and will be funded by the EU's Seventh Programme for Research (FP7). Consortium members will present research results from the first year of the project. Experts from around the world will be invited to participate and contribute to maximizing the event output for the project's future work. Three sessions, held over two days, will include presentations on: carbon footprint models; options and business experience with consumption-based environmental policies; and interactive modeling of transformation scenarios. The Carbon-CAP project has two objectives: stimulating innovative European and international climate policies through improved knowledge based on consumption emissions; and realizing a more effective policy mix for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050.

EC President-Elect Appoints Climate and Energy Commissioner [viewed]

European Union 10 September 2014: President-elect of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has announced the composition and organization of work for the next European Commission. In the new structure, six Vice-Presidents will lead Project Teams and steer and coordinate the work of Commissioners. A Project Team on the ‘Energy Union' will be led by Alenka Bratušek (Slovenia). Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete (Spain) will be in charge of both Climate Action and Energy policy.

UNEP, WMO Assessment Finds Ozone Layer Could Recover to 1980 Levels [viewed]

unep-wmo10 September 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have released the ‘Assessment for Decision-Makers,' a summary of the Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion 2014, which was prepared and reviewed by 282 scientists from 36 countries. The Assessment finds that, as a result of the implementation of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, the ozone layer is expected to recover to 1980 benchmark levels.

2014 SEED Awards Celebrate African, Low-Carbon and Women's Enterprises [viewed]

UN Circulates Member States' Proposals on WCIP Outcome Document [viewed]

The WCIP will take place as a Special Session of the UN General Assembly, on 22-23 September 2014, in New York, US.
