November 2015 Sustainable Energy1 December 2015: During the month of November, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), among others, announced sustainable energy project funding and initiatives. AfDB, IDB and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) released reports on financing and deploying clean energy. A number of related events took place throughout the month.

commonwealth29 November 2015: The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) adopted a Leaders' Statement on Climate Action in which Commonwealth members reconfirm their commitment to negotiate a legally-binding agreement on climate change at the Paris Climate Change Conference that signals the need for deep emission cuts, promotes low-emission and climate-resilient development pathways and raises mitigation ambition over time.

WMO: 2015 Likely to be Warmest Year on Record [viewed]

WMO25 November 2015: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has estimated that the world will have reached 1°C of warming above pre-industrial levels in 2015. The Organization predicts that the global average surface temperature in 2015 is likely to be the warmest on record, noting the cause as a combination of anthropogenic climate change and a strong El Niño. In addition, the years 2011-2015 make up the warmest five-year period ever recorded, according to the WMO.

UNECE Committee Explores Pathways to Sustainable Energy [viewed]

UNECE20 November 2015: Participants at the 24th session of the Committee on Sustainable Energy (CSE24) of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) discussed various pathways to sustainable energy, considered different conceptions of what "sustainable energy" is, and explored the challenges and opportunities of accelerating a transition in the UNECE region's energy system. The meeting featured a high-level segment that examined these issues in depth.

IEA, IPEEC Evaluate Energy Efficiency in Buildings of Major Economies [viewed]

iea_ipeec23 November 2015: The International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC) have co-published a report, titled 'Building Energy Performance Metrics: Supporting Energy Efficiency Progress in Major Economies,' which lays out the current state of energy performance in buildings over the period 2000-2012. The report finds that efficiency could save the equivalent of building energy use in China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the US combined annually.

Event: Education Day at COP 21 [viewed]

Education Day at COP 21 will comprise a series of events that promote changes in lifestyles, attitudes and behavior needed to foster sustainable development and to address climate change. Events during the thematic Day will provide examples of good practice and lessons learned in climate education, including at a ministerial event in climate change education and sustainable development organized by the French Government, followed by a series of mini-events, a UN side event on formal climate change education, and a CCE side event on non-formal climate change education.

Event: Farmers' Day at COP 21 [viewed]

Co-organized by the World Farmers' Organization (WFO) and the UNFCCC Secretariat, Farmers' Day will bring together participants from farming groups, researchers and civil society to discuss agriculture in light of the negotiations during the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21). The program includes panel discussions on the following issues:partnerships to improve agricultural resilience and productivity in a changing climate; partnering to scale-up climate-smart agriculture in Africa: from policy to tangible impact; and agroecology as a viable solution to create climate resilience and a sustainable food system.

MOP7 Marks Global Opening of UNECE Water Convention, Adopts Reporting Mechanism [viewed]

United Nations19 November 2015: The seventh Meeting of the Parties (MOP7) to the 1992 Helsinki Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes marked the global opening of the Convention to countries beyond the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region, adopted a reporting mechanism, and endorsed a policy guidance note on assessing the benefits of transboundary cooperation on water issues.

UNGA Meets Informally on Refugee Crisis [viewed]

unga7019 November 2015: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) held an informal meeting on advancing a comprehensive response to the global humanitarian and refugee crisis. Participants discussed: providing protection including through third-country resettlement; ensuring adequate and predictable financing; and increasing support to receiving countries. Many said it is not possible to continue business-as-usual in humanitarian affairs, and welcomed the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit.
