Major Economies Forum Meets on Sidelines of UN General Assembly [viewed]

mef30 September 2015: The Major Economies Forum on Climate and Energy (MEF) convened from 29-30 September 2015 in New York, US, on the sidelines of the general debate of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). In a statement to the MEF, US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed his country's determination to reach an ambitious, effective climate change agreement in Paris, at the upcoming 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Climate Change Issues Highlighted at UN Sustainable Development Summit [viewed]

United Nations28 September 2015: The UN Sustainable Development Summit, which met from 25-27 September 2015, in New York, US, adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. The event brought together 136 Heads of State and Government, ministers, business leaders, and members of civil society, with many leaders highlighting the importance of reaching a strong, global climate agreement at the upcoming 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Event: Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will take place in Malta, under the theme ‘Adding Global Value,' to discuss using the Commonwealth's strengths in international politics to influence and effect change on critical global issues. The meeting will take place in various historical venues around the country, while the Heads of Government retreat will be held at Fort St. Angelo. The CHOGM will hear views of the people of the Commonwealth through youth, women, business and civil society forums. The CHOGM is held every two years and is the Commonwealth's highest consultative and policy-making body.

Event: 2nd Session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will convene the 2nd session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency to discuss best practices and financial, technical and policy barriers to improving energy efficiency in the UNECE region. The agenda includes: a workshop on best policy practices for promoting energy efficiency; the report on the implementation of the Work Plan of the Group of Experts for 2014–2015; the International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development; renewal of Mandate and Draft Work Plan of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency for 2016–2017; and key messages for the Committee on Sustainable Energy. The Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency was established to carry out concrete, results-oriented activities that enhance energy efficiency, mitigate climate change, and strengthen regional cooperation in the region.

UNFCCC30 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Bhutan, Costa Rica, Dominica, Guinea-Bissau, Israel, Lebanon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Solomon Islands, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Zimbabwe have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs). All the INDCs outline the countries' intended mitigation contributions, as well as their adaptation priorities, needs and efforts.

UNGA General Debate Opens with Focus on SDG Implementation, Peace, Equality [viewed]

unga7028 September 2015: The 70th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) opened its General Debate, which is convening under the theme ‘The UN at 70: A new commitment to action.' Speakers welcomed the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with many praising the focus on poverty eradication and inequality. Many speakers also addressed UN reform and peace and security, including discussion of Syria and the refugee crisis.

Bangladesh, Seychelles, Georgia, Belarus, South Africa, Moldova Flags25 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Bangladesh, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Seychelles and South Africa have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties to have done so to 79. In addition, the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV (Measurement, Reporting and Verification) completed a training workshop on INDCs for African anglophone and lusophone countries.
