19 December 2012: The Clean Energy Ministerial's (CEM) Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP) has announced the laureates of the Lighting Global Outstanding Product Awards, which recognizes sustainable off-grid solar lighting products for people without access to electricity in developing countries.
17 December 2012: The International Energy Agency's (IEA) newly released Medium-Term Coal Market Report (MCMR) predicts that coal will come close to overtaking oil as the world's top energy source by 2017. The report expects rising coal use in every region of the world, except the United States, where cheap and abundant shale gas is displacing coal.
18 December 2012: Reporting on recent flooding in Italy and the Italian Government's efforts to secure €40 billion over the next 15 years for flood prevention, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction - Regional Office for Europe (UNISDR EUR) highlighted the need for risk management and reduction to address known and emerging risks.
18 December 2012: The European Commission has awarded over €1.2 billion in grants to 23 renewable energy projects covering a range of technologies, including: bioenergy; concentrated solar power; geothermal power; wind; ocean energy and smart grids for distributed renewable energy management.
15 December 2012: Stefan Stefansson, Ambassador of Iceland to Japan, delivered a lecture at the UN University (UNU) in Tokyo, Japan, as part of the UNU's Ambassador Lecture Series, recommending that Japan harness its untapped geothermal energy resources to minimize carbon dioxide emissions, lower heating bills and create jobs.
17 December 2012: A project supported by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), implemented by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the OSCE, installed two automated monitoring stations on the Dniester River in Western Ukraine.
17 December 2012: The Council of the EU has adopted Conclusions in response to the European Commission communication “A Blueprint to Safeguard Europe's Water Resources,” which call for better implementation of existing water legislation, including integration of water policy into other policy areas, such as agriculture, renewable energy and integrated disaster management.
6 December 2012: The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) of the UK have launched the "NAMA Facility" to support countries to implement Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMAs) to address climate change.
14 December 2012: The "Second Environmental Performance Review (EPR) of Tajikistan" conducted by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) highlights that waste management and clean water and sanitation remain challenges for this country. UNECE EPRs cover ten elements including: environmental policymaking, planning and implementation; financing of environmental policies; waste and water management; biodiversity conservation; and integration of environmental issues into energy and health policies.
13 December 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a Corrigendum to the report of the centralized review of the 2011 annual submission of the Russian Federation (FCCC/ARR/2011/RUS/Corr.1). The corrigendum introduces some amendments to the information reported on emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases (GHGs) resulting from land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) activities, in accordance with Article 3, paragraphs 3 and 4.
