FAO, EU Fund Climate-Smart Agriculture in Africa and South-east Asia [viewed]

UNU Paper Examines Climate Change Impacts on the Sovereignty of Island States [viewed]

16 January 2012: The UN University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) has released a paper on the impact of climate change on Atoll Island States, the legal effects of potential re-location of their citizens living in low-lying islands, and issues of sovereignty, which determines the ability of the people of the islands to keep long-term control over their current natural resources.

UN Secretary-General, UNGA President Call for G77 Leadership to Address Global Challenges [viewed]

Event: Sixth International Conference on Community Based Adaptation [viewed]

The meeting is sponsored by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), International Institute for Environment and Development and the Disaster Management Center of the Government of Viet Nam. The meeting will include three-days of site visits, to see how others are implementing community based adaptation, and three days of interactive discussions.

Event: CTI-CFF Council of Ministers Dialogue [viewed]

The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF) is a multilateral partnership of six countries working together to sustain extraordinary marine and coastal resources by addressing crucial issues such as food security, climate change and marine biodiversity. A dialogue between the CTI-CFF Council of Ministers, the CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat and CTI-CFF Development Partners will be held in Sabah, Malaysia on Sept. 6-7, 2012.The dialogue will focus on program updates and preparations for the next CTI Senior Officials Meeting later in 2012.

Event: Climate Change Adaptation for Coastal Communities and Training of Trainers Course [viewed]

This is the second of two climate change adaptation training courses developed based on a similar course that 14 Coral Triangle representatives attended in 2011 at the Coastal Resources Center at the University of Rhode Island (CRC). The University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute, the hub of Climate Change Adaptation Learning Network will be the lead trainer. The training, which will consist of the Climate Change Adaptation Course for Coastal Communities (8 days) and the Training of Trainers course (2 days), aims to: strengthen the ability of national and local governments, as well as organization teams, to identify climate change risks and assess adaptation options for critical coastal infrastructure, habitats and vulnerable segments of society; lead an integrated local early action planning process for climate change adaptation; plan a local vulnerability assessment and identify early actions for climate change adaptation in one or two priority/demo sites; strengthen a national resource team to support the national and local actions as the country teams move toward implementation and replication of the curriculum, adaption planning and implementation actions; promote the contribution of core team of national managers and resource persons from Malaysia and the Philippines to regional Coral Triangle Initiative capacity and future replication and sharing.

Event: 38th Summit of the G8 [viewed]

The US will host the 38th Summit of the Group of Eight (G8) at Camp David, Maryland, in May 2012. The G8 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the UK, and the US. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Chicago, back-to-back with the NATO summit, but the US announced the change in location and dates on 5 March (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/03/05/statement-press-secretary-g-8-and-nato-summits). The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold its summit in Chicago from 20-21 May (see http://www.chicagonato.org/ for more information). The Presidents Benin, Ghana and Tanzania and Prime Minister of Ethiopia are expected to join in the discussions on food security in Africa.

Bangkok Floods a Sign of a Things to Come, UN/ISDR Reports [viewed]

3 January 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has stated that the recent flooding in Bangkok, Thailand, may be a sign of things to come “amid a changing climate.” Drawing on information from the World Bank, UN/ISDR stated that the economic loss caused by the flooding is estimated to be in excess of US$45 billion.

Philippines Disaster Reduction Champion Announces Awareness Raising Workshops [viewed]

29 December 2011: The UN International Strategy or Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation in the Asia Pacific, Loren Legarda, has urged governments to be proactive in this “era of climate change,” and to not rely on post-disaster relief and rehabilitation alone.
