CTCN Receives Requests for Support from Six Countries [viewed]

ctcn2 June 2014: The UN's Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) has received eight requests for technology assistance from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Chile, Colombia, Honduras and Pakistan. Countries requested CTCN support for climate actions related to: renewable energy policies; public transportation; biodiversity monitoring; and coastal protection through saving mangrove forests.

FAO, Partners Develop Methodology for Herders and Grazers to Access Carbon Finance [viewed]

FAO30 May 2014: In recognition of the potential for grassland restoration to both mitigate climate change and improve profitability of livestock farmers, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), in collaboration with Chinese partners, has developed a tool that can measure carbon sequestration resulting from sustainable grassland management. The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) has approved the tool, which will allow the carbon credits derived from improved grassland management to be sold in voluntary carbon markets.

Event: Second Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Conference [viewed]

The Second Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Conference will take place under the theme ‘Integrated Disaster Risk Science: A Tool for Sustainability,' with an emphasis on science as a tool to address hazard risks and sustainable development. Plenaries and break-out sessions will discuss challenges in implementing integrated disaster risk research as well as inter-organisational collaboration and policy issues, using examples from global and local contexts. Plenary sessions will focus on: the role of science in the 2015 agenda; water; science and the media; and resiliency and reconstruction. More than ten breakout sessions will take place, including ones on: community disaster reduction; empowering local officials; and indigenous and vulnerable populations. A special session will address earth observations for disaster risk reduction in developing countries. The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) programme and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are organizing the conference in collaboration with a number of partners, including the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

Event: G7 Summit [viewed]

The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom (UK), the US, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission (EC) will convene for a G7 Summit from the evening of 4 June through the morning of 5 June 2014. Leaders are expected to discuss: the situation in Ukraine and relations with the Russian Federation; climate change and development; energy security; the global economy; trade; and other foreign policy topics. The 40th meeting of the G8 summit was scheduled to be held in the Russian Federation in June 2014. At their meeting in The Hague, the Netherlands in March 2014, the G7 leaders decided to hold a meeting without the Russian Federation, due to the Crimean crisis.

May 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

ebrd-worldbank-adb-gef-eib-afdbMay 2014: During May, international and regional financial institutions, including the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), undertook a variety of actions related to water resources, including presenting the results of existing projects, participating in regional conferences and approving new loans. Projects this month addressed issues including transboundary water cooperation, water supply and sanitation, hydroelectric generation, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and ecosystem service conservation, among others.
