OECD Inventory Highlights Fossil Fuel Subsidies in OECD Member Countries [viewed]

OECD11 February 2013: A new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), titled "Inventory of Estimated Budgetary Support and Tax Expenditures for Fossil Fuels 2013," provides examples from over 550 measures that support fossil-fuel production or use in the 34 OECD member countries. The report indicates that, between 2005 and 2011, these measures cost taxpayers between US$55-90 billion annually.

CEM4 Preparatory Meeting Identifies Gaps in 13 Clean Energy Initiatives [viewed]

11 February 2013: During a preparatory meeting for the fourth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM4), which is to be held in April in Delhi, India, ministers from participating countries discussed progress on CEM's 13 clean energy initiatives, finalized the CEM4 agenda, and received a preview of the International Energy Agency's (IEA) "Clean Energy Progress Report."

GEF SGP Projects in Namibia and Sri Lanka Highlighted by UNFCCC Momentum for Change Initiative [viewed]

11 February 2013: Climate-related projects implemented in Namibia and Sri Lanka, and supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), were two of nine projects highlighted by the "Momentum for Change" initiative during the December 2012 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations held in Doha, Qatar. The initiative, organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, highlights positive developments in climate change adaptation and mitigation that have the potential to be replicated elsewhere.

UNEP Report Offers Lessons Learned from Forest Financing for REDD+ [viewed]

Economics of Forest and Forest Carbon ProjectsFebruary 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNEP Risø Centre have launched a report, titled "Translating lessons learned from financing forest projects into national REDD+ strategy development and implementation." The report uses examples from eight projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America to generate advice on structuring national REDD+ programmes, which it says offer the greatest potential for scaling up investment in REDD+.

Event: GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Cambodia [viewed]

The Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) will host discussions on priority issues, development and implementation of Global Environment Facility (GEF) projects, and project integration in national development frameworks. The event will bring together focal points from the GEF, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), with representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat, and the GEF Agencies. The event will include exercises on national capacity development (NCSA), results-based management, monitoring and evaluation, synergies in project design, as well as discussions on the GEF 2020 Strategy, the new GEF Fee Policy, and the Project Cycle harmonization. The registration deadline for civil society participants is 1 March 2013.

The event will discuss how the project be adapted and transferred to other tourism destinations in Indonesia and worldwide.

Low Emission Capacity Building Programme Offers Guidance on NAMA Prioritization [viewed]

LECBP11 February 2013: The Low Emission Capacity Building Programme (LECBP) has hosted a webinar that introduced LECBP country teams and other practitioners to an approach developed by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) to prioritizing nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs). The approach has been tested and implemented in Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh and Kenya.
