Bonn Challenge Celebrates 100 Million Hectares Milestone at WCC [viewed]

bonn_challange4 September 2016: With a series of events dubbed the 'Bonn Challenge Journey,' participants at the 2016 International Union for the Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) World Conservation Congress (WCC) have marked a milestone in commitments for restoring degraded and deforested land under the Bonn Challenge. Including announcements made at WCC, the Bonn Challenge has now received commitments to restore 113 million hectares, putting the initiative on track to meeting its objective to restore 150 million hectares by 2020.

World Conservation Congress Opens, Focus on Scaling up Action on SDGs [viewed]

word_conservation_congress1 September 2016: The International Union for the Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) World Conservation Congress (WCC), 'Planet at the Crossroads,' opened on 1 September in Honolulu, Hawai'i, the US. The WCC will focus on the challenge of attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the next 15 years. Over 6,000 participants from around the world are expected to attend the WCC, making it the largest gathering of environmental policymakers since the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and agreement on the SDGs.

UNU Warns Inadequate Infrastructure Increases Disaster Risk [viewed]

UNU25 August 2016: Inadequate infrastructure and weak logistic chains increase the risk that an extreme natural event, such as an earthquake or flood, will become a disaster, according to the 'WorldRiskReport 2016.' The report, published by the UN University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft – Gemeinsam für Menschen in Not e.V., analyzes the role of infrastructure and logistics in determining a country's disaster risk.

Event: Climate Week NYC [viewed]

Climate Week NYC will bring together business and government leaders to continue the transition toward net zero emissions, through sharing a vision of a strong, low carbon economy, which requires innovation, a clean energy revolution and finance mechanisms. The annual event, which is convened by The Climate Group, will take place from 19-25 September 2016, in New York, US, during the 71st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The opening ceremony, titled 'America Means Business: US Leadership in a Post-Paris World,' will focus on climate leadership in the 21st century, technology and innovation, and the clean energy transition. Climate Week NYC's “signature” event, 'Securing a Paris Dividend: Leadership and innovation for a strong, sustainable economy,' will include keynote addresses from: John Kufuor, former President of Ghana and the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Climate Change; Prakash Javadekar, Minister of State Environment, Forests and Climate Change, India; Michael Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change; Angel Gurria, Secretary-General, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); and Jim Yong Kim, World Bank Group President. More than 30 affiliated events, including government panel discussions, workshops, academic seminars, exhibitions and artistic productions, will take place throughout the week. Events will focus on, inter alia: the role of corporate campaigns in the changing global energy landscape towards renewable energy; climate neutrality; climate finance; catalyzing climate change innovation through charitable and impact investment; the role of green bonds in public finance; energy storage; sustainable investment; urban innovation for livable cities; innovative approaches for scaling up climate-smart agriculture; climate action and sustainable land use in forestry and agriculture; and transformative low-carbon scenarios and risk implications for fossil fuel demand. Carbon Forum North America and a US-Canada Renewable Energy Roundtable will also convene, as will the UN Private Sector Forum, which will focus on realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Climate Group, which was founded in 2004, works with business and government to promote clean technologies and policies, in order to expand clean technology markets and reducing emissions.

Transparency and Compliance Update: Final Reports on Developed Countries' Kyoto Protocol Compliance, 2014 GHG Emissions Released [viewed]

UNFCCC25 August 2016: During the month of August, the UNFCCC Secretariat released a compilation of developed country Parties' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on their latest inventory submissions for 2014, as well as the final compliance reports for the first commitment period (CP1), 2008-2012, of the Kyoto Protocol. In addition, a number of updates on national reporting from Parties on their climate change action, including status reports on GHG inventories and the reports of the technical review of second Biennial Report (BR2) submissions, were published.

Capacity Building and Technology Update: Technology Action Plan Guidance Enhances Paris Agreement Implementation [viewed]

capacity_building_technology21 August 2016: In Paris, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC requested the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) to initiate the elaboration of the technology framework established under the Paris Agreement, which, among other things, should facilitate the undertaking and updating of technology needs assessments (TNAs), as well as the enhanced implementation of their results. An enhanced guidance issued by the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) for preparing a technology action plan (TAP) supports the new technology framework as well as Parties' long-term vision on technology development and transfer reflected in the Paris Agreement.

Event: G20 Summit - China 2016 [viewed]

The Group of 20 leaders will convene in Hangzhou, China, to discuss way to enhance international economic cooperation. The theme of the 2016 Summit is China, 'Towards an innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive world economy'. Four Sherpas' Meetings will be held before the Summit for preparation, and one after the Summit on follow-up. In addition, four meetings will be held for Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, and six for finance deputies to move forward the financial agenda. G20 trade, employment, energy and agriculture ministers meetings as well as relevant working groups meetings will also seek to promote cooperation in their respective areas and prepare the deliverables for the Summit.
