unfccc_iea_ccafs_nama_wb6 June 2016: Addressing the Group of Seven (G7), UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres stated on 23 May, “Today, the challenge is to translate intent into action…that does justice to the extraordinary ambition enshrined in the Paris Agreement….” Figueres attended her final intersessional meeting of the UNFCCC subsidiary bodies from 16-26 May in Bonn, Germany, where an overarching theme of 'Accelerating Implementation of the Paris Agreement' pervaded many of the special events and negotiations.

Energy Outlook: Clean Energy Investments, RE Employment Increasing, Cities Unlock Mitigation Potential [viewed]

unfccc_wb_irena_iea2 June 2016: Energy-related news of the past few weeks reported here indicate that regional development banks' investments in clean energy are increasing. Other recent developments show that: renewables are currently firmly established as competitive, mainstream sources of energy; energy efficiency (EE) action in urban environments helps cities transition to sustainable energy systems; and employment in renewable energy (RE) is on the rise. Events, initiatives and publications described in this update contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDGs 7 (Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all), 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) and 1 (End poverty in all its forms everywhere).

Transparency and Compliance Update: UNFCCC National Reporting News Highlighted, Capacity Building Initiative Launched [viewed]

unfccc_gef_mrv1 June 2016: A transparency and compliance regime is vital for building international trust and confidence that action to address climate change is taking place, as well as for assessing how to facilitate further action. In the last month, the UNFCCC Secretariat has released updates regarding national reporting from Parties on their climate change action, including a status report on Switzerland's greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, the status of Biennial Report (BR) submissions and assistance from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to developing countries for their Biennial Update Reports (BURs). In addition, during the Bonn Climate Change Conference, held 16-26 May, 13 developing country Parties presented their experience with preparing BURs, and the GEF updated participants on progress toward establishing and funding the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT).

IPoA Mid-term Review Calls for Greater Support to LDCs [viewed]

review29 May 2016: The Mid-term Review of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for the Decade 2011-2020 has closed with a call for greater support to the world's more vulnerable countries. The review focused on the 48 LDCs and their progress over the past five years, and on finding ways to accelerate their sustainable development. The conference resulted in a political declaration that had been negotiated among UN Member States in the months leading up to the review.

ITU, UNECE Launch United for Smart Sustainable Cities Initiative [viewed]

unece_itu26 May 2016: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have launched a global initiative to advocate for public policy that will promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) as a catalyst for transitioning to "smart sustainable cities." The United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) initiative will help implement Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

EBRD to Dedicate Next 25 Years to Green Economy Transition [viewed]

Carbon pricing continued to receive attention, alongside climate change planning and financing in Africa. Calls were also made to pay increased attention to the growing 'adaptation finance gap,' and climate and disaster risks, including in investments. A number of resilience projects received funding, and development banks and climate funds organized readiness workshops.
