GEF CEO Stresses India's Role in 2015 Climate Agreement [viewed]

GEF19 December 2014: In an editorial written for the Hindu Business Line, Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), notes that India, as the world's third largest economy in purchasing power parity, will play a critical role in combating climate change. She writes that the most important building block of the 2015 Paris climate agreement will be the announcement of each country's intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) to reduce emissions, and that India's INDC will be closely scrutinized.

Event: Asia Clean Energy Forum 2015 [viewed]

The Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF), organized since 2006, seeks to provide a space for sharing best practices in policy, technology and finance to support climate and energy security in the region. The event comprises pre-forum events, plenary sessions, keynote presentations, panel discussions and 'Deep Dive Workshops' on specific topics. The 2015 ACEF is being organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Energy Council (WEC) and the Korea Energy Management Corporation (KEMCO). Pre-forum events of the 2015 ACEF include the International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference and the Quantum Leap in Wind Workshop.

Event: ICAO Environmental ​Seminars in the Middle East Region [viewed]

As part of a series of two environmental seminars held back-to-back in each region of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Aviation and Environment Seminar will be held from 23-24 March 2015, and the States' Action Plans Seminar will be held from 24-25 March 2015, in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for the Middle East Region. The seminars are supporting ICAO member States in their efforts to institute climate-friendly aviation. The first seminar, intended for civil aviation, environment, energy, industry, civil society, academia, and National Action Plan (NAP) representatives, as well as the general public, will cover: aviation and environmental outlook, aircraft noise, local air quality, global emissions, sustainable alternative fuels, market-based measures, technology, operations, green airports, States' action plans, assistance to States and financing. The second seminar is for NAP Focal Points to learn about ICAO Guidance on State Action Plans; the Action Plan Emissions Reduction (APER) website, supporting documents and ICAO tools; assistance for the implementation of the Action Plan; and States' best practices.

Organized for the first time, Resilient Cities Asia 2015, taking place from 11-13 February 2015, in Bangkok, Thailand, will aim to become a key regional platform for urban resilience and climate change adaptation, providing innovative solutions for cities and local governments, currently facing related threats and challenges, that will help mainstream resilience considerations into policy and practice. The event builds on 'Resilient Cities - The Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation,' held since 2010, in Bonn, Germany, and is organized by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.

Event: Central Asia and South Caucasus Regional Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

Organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, the UN Development Programme - Kyrgyzstan (UNDP Kyrgyzstan) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia (UNISDR CA), and hosted by the Government of Kyrgysztan, this meeting of Ministers of Disaster Management and Emergency Situations of the Central Asian and South Caucasus countries will discuss and agree on a regional statement on cooperation and coordination in the implementation of the post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), to be adopted at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR), to be held from 14-18 March 2015, in Sendai, Japan. The meeting follows a series of consultations held in the region since 2013.

Event: International Recovery Forum 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 International Recovery Forum will be organized under the theme 'Commemorating Two Decades of Lessons from the 1995 Kobe Earthquake and its Critical Importance to the Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction,' coinciding with a series of commemorative events on disaster risk reduction (DRR) planned in Kobe, Japan, for the month of January 2015. The Forum is being organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), the Asian Disaster Reduction Centre (ADRC), Japan's Cabinet Office, the Hyogo Prefectural Government (HPG) and the International Recovery Platform (IRP). The Forum outcomes are expected to provide inputs for the discussions on DRR at the forthcoming World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, taking place from 14-18 March 2015 in Sendai, Japan.

OECD Examines Climate Finance Tracking [viewed]

OECD_NEW4 December 2014: The Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) hosted a side event during the Lima Climate Change Conference on 'Tracking Public and Private Climate Finance: Towards Improved Data and Increased Transparency.' The event considered the implications of recent achievements in data and tracking for the UNFCCC and how these methodological developments might contribute to a 2015 climate agreement.

Climate Finance Update19 December 2014: During December 2014, finance for climate change mitigation and adaptation projects was announced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank. Germany, Norway and the UK also reported on funding for projects to be undertaken in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the GEF and IDB released climate-related publications.
