UNGA Adopts Resolution on Samoa Pathway [viewed]

69th Session of the UNGA14 November 2014: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on the outcome document of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the 'SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway' (A/69/L.6), by consensus. The Samoa Pathway recognizes the adverse impacts of climate change and sea-level rise on SIDS' efforts to achieve sustainable development as well as to their survival and viability, and addresses economic development, food security, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and ocean management, among other issues.

US, Japan Announce Pledges to the Green Climate Fund [viewed]

us-japan15 November 2014: The US has announced a US$3 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). US President Barak Obama made the announcement on the eve of the G20 Summit, which convened in Brisbane, Australia, from 15-16 November 2014. In a separate announcement, also on the margins of the G20 Summit, Japan said it would pledge US$1.5 billion. With these two announcements, the pledges received thus far by the GCF amount to US$7.5 billion.

OECD Makes the Case for Green Growth in Southeast Asia [viewed]

OECD_NEW11 November 2014: As part of its Green Growth Series, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released a report detailing the unsustainability of Southeast Asia's current growth path. The report finds that climate change, fossil fuel-related pollution and an over-dependence on natural resources will hurt growth, prosperity and health in the long-run.

UNEP Forum Urges Accelerated Transition to Energy Efficient Lighting [viewed]

enlighten11 November 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) en.lighten initiative has convened the Global Efficient Lighting Forum, which focused on accelerating the global phase-in of energy-efficient lighting products. The forum brought together representatives from electrical utilities, lighting manufacturers, development banks, financial institutions and international agencies to reaffirm their commitment to mitigate climate change by transitioning to energy-efficient lighting, and to discuss the best ways to accelerate such a transition.

Event: 3rd ASEAN Climate Outlook Forum [viewed]

The 3rd ASEAN Climate Outlook Forum (ASEANCOF-3) is being organized by the Meteorological Service Singapore, as host of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Specialized Meteorological Centre. Attendees will include national meteorological services, and representatives from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), ASEAN Secretariat, among others. The forum will meet for two days, followed by a training workshop on the third day. ASEANCOF-3 will focus on, among other issues, the application of long-range forecasts in the water management sector.

UNFCCC10 November 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published submissions from Bolivia, on behalf of the Group of 77 and China (G-77/China), and Sudan, on behalf of the African Group, containing their views on the second review of the Adaptation Fund, in advance of the 41st session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) to be held in Lima, Peru, in December 2014.

UNFCCC Publishes Country Views on REDD+ Safeguard Information Systems [viewed]

UNFCCC6 November 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has compiled submissions received from developing country Parties on their views regarding information systems to track the implementation of safeguards for REDD+ (Decision 1/CP.16, Appendix I). The Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) asked parties to comment on their experiences, lessons learned and challenges in developing such systems.

Governments Conclude Initial Exchange of Views on Post-2015 Negotiations [viewed]

unga6910 November 2014: UN Member States convened for the second informal meeting of the plenary on the organization and modalities of intergovernmental negotiations and remaining issues related to the Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. The co-facilitators – David Donoghue, Permanent Representative of Ireland, and Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya – expect to issue a “starting document” by the week of 17 November, covering the process, road map, and scope of work for intergovernmental negotiations.
