Hong Kong's Religious Leaders Urge Consensus on Climate Change [viewed]

23 January 2015: The six main religions of Hong Kong have released a joint, interfaith statement sounding the alarm on climate change. The statement emphasizes the impact climate change is having on weather, and consequently on famine, diseases and storms. The religious leaders express concern that the poor and vulnerable are and will be most impacted by the "potentially catastrophic consequences" of unabated carbon emissions.

UNFCCC Launches National Contributions Web Portal [viewed]

UNFCCC22 January 2015: The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat has launched a web-based portal for submissions by parties to the UNFCCC of their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs). The Secretariat will prepare a report on the aggregate effect of INDCs communicated via the portal a month in advance of the Paris Climate Change Conference, scheduled to take place in December 2015.

UNEP Identifies Innovations for Scaling up Sustainable Development Financing [viewed]

UNEP21 January 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report, titled 'Pathways to Scale,' which identifies "critical innovations in the US$300+ trillion global financial system that can help bring together the historically separate agendas of financial reform and sustainable development." Drawing on country-level examples of financial market and institutional reforms, the report proposes a number of pathways towards 'closing the asset and investment gap' at national and higher levels.

Event: ICLEI World Congress 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) World Congress will be held under the theme of 'Sustainable Solutions for an Urban Future' in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The week-long triennial event will include: the ICLEI Council Meeting; plenaries on trends and targets, financing, accelerating local action and the SDGs; and sessions on 'Urban China,' water and innovative city leaders. Alongside the Congress, parallel events are planned, including an Urban Nature Forum, Researchers' Symposium and technical site visits in the city of Seoul. An expected outcome of the Congress is the collation of local governments' proposals into coherent themes and agendas so that they may contribute to the international debate.

Event: Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week [viewed]

The city of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Masdar are hosting Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2015 (ADSW) to promote sustainable development and accelerated adoption of clean energy. Concurrent events taking place during ADSW include: the International Water Summit; Abu Dhabi Renewable Energy Conference; seventh Zayed Future Energy Prize Award Ceremony; International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) fifth Assembly; EcoWASTE; and ADSW Festival. The events are expected to attract upwards of 35,000 attendees, who will have the chance to learn about the interconnected challenges and opportunities related to water, energy and electricity access, technological innovation and sustainable development through exhibits, panels and workshops.

Al Gore Receives ZFEP Lifetime Achievement Award [viewed]

Zayed Future19 January 2015: Former US Vice President Al Gore has received the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Zayed Future Energy Prize (ZFEP) for his “personal and political commitment to raise international awareness about the dangers of climate change, while reinforcing optimism that the global community can and will successfully tackle the challenge.” His Highness General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, presented Gore with the award during a ceremony held during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2015.

The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) comprises Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam, and the Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces of the People's Republic of China. Connected by the Mekong River, the subregion covers 2.6 million square kilometers and has a combined population of about 332 million. The GMS has been one of the fastest growing regions in the world, with gross domestic product (GDP) growth averaging over 9.5% annually between 2000 and 2009.
