IEA, IPEEC Evaluate Energy Efficiency in Buildings of Major Economies [viewed]

iea_ipeec23 November 2015: The International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC) have co-published a report, titled 'Building Energy Performance Metrics: Supporting Energy Efficiency Progress in Major Economies,' which lays out the current state of energy performance in buildings over the period 2000-2012. The report finds that efficiency could save the equivalent of building energy use in China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the US combined annually.

UNGA Meets Informally on Refugee Crisis [viewed]

unga7019 November 2015: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) held an informal meeting on advancing a comprehensive response to the global humanitarian and refugee crisis. Participants discussed: providing protection including through third-country resettlement; ensuring adequate and predictable financing; and increasing support to receiving countries. Many said it is not possible to continue business-as-usual in humanitarian affairs, and welcomed the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit.

UNFCCC Compiles Annex I Parties' Reporting on Minimizing Impacts of Response Measures [viewed]

UNFCCC17 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a paper (FCCC/WEB/ART314/2015) compiling the information provided by Annex I Parties that are Parties to the Kyoto Protocol on efforts to minimize the adverse impacts associated with response measures, in accordance with Article 3.14 of the Protocol. According to the paper, 17 Parties submitted information in 2015 on minimizing these impacts in their National Inventory Reports (NIRs), with nine presenting major changes and/or additional information.

WorldRisk Report 2015: Food Insecurity Increases Disaster Risk [viewed]

The UN University (UNU) has launched a report addressing the consequences of extreme natural events in 171 countries, and the connection between food security and disaster risk. Upon the report's launch, Peter Mucke, Managing Director of the WorldRiskReport 2015, said crises and disasters cause hunger, the “catastrophic effects of natural hazards” can be decreased by ensuring that people are fed, and hungry people are more vulnerable to disasters, wars and conflicts.

WHO Calls for Strong Climate Agreement to Protect Health [viewed]

WHO17 November 2015: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a statement urging countries to consider the impacts of climate change on human health during the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, in order to reduce climate-related deaths and protect future generations' health. WHO has also released a first set of climate change and health country profiles to support negotiators in considering health issues during COP 21.

CCAFS Outlines Six Steps to Climate-Smart Agriculture [viewed]

Using examples from five years of CCAFS research, the booklet lays out how actions on disseminating technology, promoting insurance, delivering climate forecasts, enhancing national enabling environments, informing global policies and processes, and scaling up investments in climate smart-agriculture contribute to making the world's poorest farmers more climate resilient.

Arab Countries Agree on Roadmap to Implement Sendai Framework [viewed]

unisdr_arab13 November 2015: The Arab region agreed on a roadmap for implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 in order to reduce disaster losses, and which is intended to revitalize the disaster risk coordination mechanism established in 2007 by the League of Arab States. More than 120 participants representing governments, cities, academia, civil society, youth and international organizations met in Cairo, Egypt, to launch an Arab Strategy for DRR specific to the region's needs and priorities and aligned with the Sendai Framework's targets.
