Event: 38th Summit of the G8 [viewed]

The US will host the 38th Summit of the Group of Eight (G8) at Camp David, Maryland, in May 2012. The G8 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the UK, and the US. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Chicago, back-to-back with the NATO summit, but the US announced the change in location and dates on 5 March (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/03/05/statement-press-secretary-g-8-and-nato-summits). The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold its summit in Chicago from 20-21 May (see http://www.chicagonato.org/ for more information). The Presidents Benin, Ghana and Tanzania and Prime Minister of Ethiopia are expected to join in the discussions on food security in Africa.

Bangkok Floods a Sign of a Things to Come, UN/ISDR Reports [viewed]

3 January 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has stated that the recent flooding in Bangkok, Thailand, may be a sign of things to come “amid a changing climate.” Drawing on information from the World Bank, UN/ISDR stated that the economic loss caused by the flooding is estimated to be in excess of US$45 billion.

UNEP Announces Launch of China's HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan [viewed]

UNEP20 December 2011: The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) has announced the launch of China's Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) under the Montreal Protocol. The US$270 million HPMP aims cut consumption of HCFCs in China by January 2015.

GEF-LDCF Funded Project Reduces Climate Vulnerabilities in Bhutan [viewed]

December 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF), through its Least Developed Country Fund (LDCF), has reported on its support of an initiative with the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Government of Bhutan to reduce climate change induced risks and vulnerabilities from glacial lake outburst in two of the country's most vulnerable areas.

UN/ISDR Calls for Increased Education on Disasters and Climate Change [viewed]
