February 2011: The January 2011 issue of the newsletter of Silva Mediterranea, a statutory body of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), looks at a newly formed partnership, the Collaborative Partnership on Mediterranean Forests, and reviews the outcomes of a workshop on forest policy and climate change in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region.
23 February 2011: The European Commission and the UN Environment programme (UNEP) have issued a joint statement signaling the renewal of their political will to consolidate, develop and increase their cooperation and effectiveness to achieve their common goals and objectives in the field of environment.
18 February 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that as a result of the work of the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV), the Government of Kenya has launched a transition to low-sulphur diesel.
17 February 2011: Valerie Amos, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, called for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and recovery to be "integrated into humanitarian action to improve preparedness and enhance resilience" of populations. Amos was speaking at a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 17 February 2011.
17 February 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN has released a new report titled "Making Integrated Food-Energy Systems (IFES) Work for People and Climate: An Overview."
The objective of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Amazon, Congo, and Borneo-Mekong Forest Basins is to achieve a plan for sustainable management of forest ecosystems and to contribute to climate regulation by: establishing baseline data on the forest resources of the three Basins; establishing a formal platform for mutual consultation and exchange on forest and environmental issues by signing a framework agreement between the Basins; and developing a shared position on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks) and the climate change agreement before the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). More than 35 nations are expected to participate. The meeting is also part of celebrations of the International Year of Forests (2011), and its discussions and outcomes will feed into preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
This Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Designated National Authority (DNA) Forum will be held for the African region.
11 February 2011: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has entered into an agreement with Statoil, an international energy company in oil and gas production, to collaborate in the promotion of access to sustainable energy in developing countries.
4 February 2011: The ASB Partnership for the Tropical Forest Margins (ASB) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) held a meeting of the REDD+ Development Dividend Task Force in Manila, Philippines, on 25-26 January 2011.
February 2011: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has published a paper titled "The Context of REDD+ in Cameroon: Drivers, Agents and Institutions."
