12 May 2011: Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, NASA, HP and the World Bank, through their initiative titled "Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK)," will bring together thousands of people in over 18 locations worldwide, on 4-5 June 2011, to create open source e-solutions to disaster risk management and climate change adaptation challenges.
13 May 2011: Over 7,000 participants, including Heads of State and government, international organizations' representatives and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC IV) from 9-13 May 2011. The Conference aimed to assess the results of the 10-year Brussels Action Plan for the LDCs, which was adopted in 2001, and to agree on new measures and strategies for the sustainable development of LDCs into the next decade.
12 May 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) International Resource Panel has released a report titled “Decoupling natural resource use and environmental impacts from economic growth.”
May 2011: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released a number of publications relevant to REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks).
12 May 2011: The African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the UN Commission for Africa (UNECA) have launched a Joint Secretariat Support Office (JSSO) to support common African policy positions vis-à-vis the donor community and global fora, such as the G20 with regard to infrastructure development and climate change.
May 2010: The UN Development Programme Drylands Development Centre (UNDP-DDC) is conducting a survey on the Africa-Asia Drought Risk Management Peer Assistance (AADP) Project under the framework of the Integrated Drylands Development Programme. The project aims to create an enabling environment for inter-regional knowledge sharing among drought-prone countries, while facilitating the scaling up of proven drought risk management (DRM) practices in Africa and Asia.
9 May 2011: The EU and Liberia have concluded a bilateral agreement to certify the legal origin of imported wood products into the EU.
10 May 2011: At the International Wildland Fire Conference in Sun City, South Africa, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) released a preliminary report titled “Findings and Implications from a Coarse-Scale Global Assessment of Recent Selected Mega-Fires.” The report suggests that changing climate may be exacerbating the growing number of mega-fires and resulting in a positive feedback loop.
9 May 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) have released a report titled “Why a Green Economy Matters for Least Developed Countries.”
May 2011: The Program on Forests (PROFOR) of the World Bank has released the May issue of its newsletter, titled "PROFOR Update," which highlights PROFOR's recent activities relating to forests and climate change.
