UNGA High-level Debate Recognizes Climate Change Effects on Vulnerable States [viewed]

26 September 2012: During the second day of the High-level Debate of the 67th session UN General Assembly (UNGA), several speakers expressed commitments to address climate change. Event: Conference of African Ministers of Agriculture and Trade 2012 [viewed]

Convened under the theme “Boosting Intra-African Trade for Ensuring Food and Nutrition Security," the Conference of African Ministers of Agriculture and Trade (CAMAT) 2012 provides a platform for African Ministers of Agriculture and Trade to renew commitments towards, and discuss strategies for, boosting intra-African trade to allow greater food and nutrition security on the continent. CAMAT 2012 will also see the rollout of the ccelerated Agribusiness and Agro-Industries Development Initiative (3ADI) programme, to assist smallholder farmers to attain greater market access.

Event: Third Mediterranean Forest Week [viewed]

The third Mediterranean Forest Week is being organized by the Governments of Algeria, France, Germany, Tunisia and Turkey along with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Secretariat of the Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions, l'Association Internationale Forêts Méditerranéennes (AIFM), Centre Technique Forestier Tropical (CTFT), The European Forest Institute (EFIMED), the Mediterranean Forests Model Network (MFMN), and Plan Bleu. The Week will be convened under the theme, "Mediterranean forests for sustainable development of territories: what strategies of mitigation and adaptation to global change". It will focus on strengthening links between the scientific community and other stakeholders working in, or reliant upon, Mediterranean Forests examining both the contribution of Mediterranean forests to economic development and ecosystem services and the links between climate change and Mediterranean forests.

AfDB17 September 2012: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has published the July-August issue of its Climate Finance Newsletter, which spotlights efforts to facilitate green growth in Northern Africa, noting that such investments will build sustainable infrastructure, enhance livelihood resilience to withstand climatic shocks and manage natural resources.

BASIC Countries Call for Strengthened Commitments Ahead of Doha [viewed]

21 September 2012: The 12th BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change concluded with the adoption of a joint statement in which the leaders reiterate their commitment to a successful outcome of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to take place at the end of 2012, in Doha, Qatar.

UNCTAD Trade and Development Board Discusses Sustainable Development in Africa [viewed]

UNCTAD20 September: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) held the 59th session of the UNCTAD Trade and Development Board, which included a session on the sustainable structural transformation in Africa, highlighting challenges for African countries in making structural changes to their economies, as well as opportunities offered by greening economic growth.

UNGA 66 Concludes with Decisions on Africa, Indigenous Conference, SDG Working Group [viewed]

17 September 2012: Concluding the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), outgoing President Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser recalled the Assembly's focus on disaster prevention and response, including local resilience and risk mitigation, and on sustainable development and global prosperity. Also during the plenary meeting, the Assembly took decisions on Africa, the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, and the distribution of seats in the open working group on sustainable development (OWG).
