UNESCO IOC Takes Stock of West African Coastal Adaptation Project [viewed]

13 June 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has convened a seminar to analyze the results of a project titled Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal zones of West Africa (ACCC), discuss ways to fill gaps identified during the project, and agree on future action.

Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum Releases June to August Rainfall Statement [viewed]

WMO30 May 2012: The 31st Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACO 31) concluded with a statement on the June to August rainfall season. The statement indicates an increased likelihood of near normal to above normal rainfall for the June to August rainfall season in areas of the northern sector of the Greater Horn of Africa. For the rest of the Greater Horn of Africa, the June to August period is expected to remain generally dry during the season.

UNU Project on Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Africa Holds Kick-Off Meeting [viewed]

11 June 2012: A five-year research project on Enhancing Resilience to Climate and Ecosystem Changes in Semi-Arid Africa: An Integrated Approach (CECAR-Africa) held a kick-off meeting to formally commence its operational phase. CECAR-Africa focuses on the vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change in developing countries, particularly in Africa.

GEF Council Meeting Approves Largest Work Program to Date [viewed]

After the GEF Council unanimously decided to appoint Naoko Ishii (Japan) as the next GEF CEO/Chairperson, she greeted the Council and current CEO/Chairperson Monique Barbut.7 June 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved a Work Program of 84 projects and two programmatic approaches amounting to US$667.26 million in GEF project grants, and appointed Naoko Ishii (Japan) as the GEF's new Chairperson and CEO.

Event: Dakar: Managing the Regional Risks of Climate Extremes and Disasters – Learning from the IPCC Special Report [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Overseas Development Institute, Norway's Climate and Pollution Agency, Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) are co-organizing an outreach workshop titled: “Managing the Risks of Climate Extremes and Disasters (SREX) in West Africa – What can we learn from the IPCC Special Report?” The two-day event is designed for policy makers, business leaders, academics and other stakeholders that are, have been, or may be impacted by climate extremes and disasters. The workshop seeks to promote discussion of the IPCC Special Report on "Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters for Advancing Climate Change Adaptation" (SREX). The event is part of a series of outreach events in Asia, Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean held from April-June 2012.

African Economic Communities Create Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Programme [viewed]
