Africa MDG Report Reviews Progress, Looks Forward to SDGs [viewed]

UNECA28 September 2015: Despite challenging initial conditions, African countries have made progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), according to the 2015 edition of an Africa-focused MDG report. This year's report, titled ‘Assessing Progress in Africa Toward the Millennium Development Goals,' emphasizes that success in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will depend on embracing the three dimensions of sustainability, and on “credible means of implementation,” including financing and renewed commitment.

Event: FCPF Participants Assembly and Participants Committee Meeting [viewed]

Organized by the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), the twentieth meeting of the Participants Committee is expected to address the readiness package of Costa Rica and mid-term progress reports with requests for additional funding by Chile, Mozambique and Nepal. The eighth meeting of the Participants Assembly is expected to hear reports and address administrative and legal matters. A joint FCPF/UN-REDD Programme Knowledge Exchange Day is scheduled for 8 November.

Religious Leaders Urge Ambitious Climate Agreement [viewed]

faith-leaders-declaration20 October 2015: UNFCCC Executive Director Christiana Figueres received a statement from a delegation of 154 faith and spiritual leaders representing different faith groups, headed by South African Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, calling for an ambitious climate agreement, reminding governments to commit to emission cuts and climate risk reduction, and pledging contributions from their own faith communities, including fossil fuel divestment.

Governments Air Priorities for 2030 Agenda, Sustainable Development [viewed]

unga7020 October 2015: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) held its discussion of sustainable development (agenda item 20) and several sub-items, including on climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and small island developing States (SIDS). UN Assistant Secretary-General, Lenni Montiel, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), who introduced several reports of the UN Secretary-General, said sustainable development is not confined to one item on the Committee's agenda; instead, the Committee should consider all issues before it through the lens of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

OECD Urges Enhanced Mitigation Action [viewed]

OECD_NEW20 October 2015: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published an analysis of climate change mitigation policies in 44 countries, which finds that governments in these countries must significantly enhance their climate change policies in order to realize their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) and achieve the goal of limiting the temperature rise to 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

The Carbon Pricing Panel was convened by World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde, joined by the Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Angel Gurria.

Francophone Countries Discuss Linkages Among Land, Climate and SDGs [viewed]

francophone_unccd19 October 2015: The Institut de la Francophonie pour le Développement Durable (IFDD), a subsidiary body of the International Organization of the Francophonie (IOF), under the chairmanship of Senegal and in cooperation with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat, organized a discussion on the topic of how to use the fight against climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as leverage for soil preservation. The event took place on the sidelines of the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UNCCD.
