Event: NAP-GSP Africa Regional Training Workshop (Francophone) [viewed]

The National Adaptation Plan Global Support Programme (NAP-GSP) will convene a four-day, high-level training and knowledge exchange on developing and implementing NAPs. Environment, finance and planning ministers from French-speaking Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Africa will attend the workshop. The workshop objectives include: improving understanding of the NAP process; clarifying entry points for a NAP process, taking into account the local political economy; identifying the technical, financial and institutional needs for integrating the NAP process into the country's planning and budgeting process; learning what other countries have done/are doing to advance their NAPs; increasing awareness of methods and tools for developing a strategy to advance NAPs in the ministers' respective countries; and exchanging information on the potential financing mechanisms for NAPs. NAP-GSP is a project of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

CIFOR Analyzes Challenges to REDD+ in Six Countries [viewed]

CIFORApril 2014: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released a report analyzing the implementation of REDD+ in six countries. 'The challenges of establishing REDD+ on the ground' covers 23 sub-national programmes, concluding that the greatest challenges facing REDD+ implementation are inadequate economic incentives coupled with insecure land tenure and use rights.

FAO Data Show Rising Agriculture Emissions, Declining Net Land-use Change Emissions [viewed]

FAO11 April 2014: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture, forestry and fisheries and other land uses (AFOLU) have doubled over the past fifty years, according to estimates released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). Without increased efforts to address and reduce these emissions, the FAO cautions that emissions could increase an additional 30% by 2050.

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - Regional Office for Africa (UNISDR AF), the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will bring together African Governments, regional intergovernmental organizations, civil society representatives, members of academic institutions, local governments, private sector organizations, the media, and youth at the Fifth Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting is expected to result in an African position on a Post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the context of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
