Indian Ocean Commission Develops Climate Change Adaptation Plan [viewed]

IOC29 March 2016: The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), under the guidance of its member States, has announced its upcoming adoption of an action plan for operationalizing its regional adaptation strategy from 2016-2020, pointing to the climate change vulnerabilities of the southwest Indian Ocean island States. The plan will aim to identify the specific vulnerabilities of member States, support them in their adaptation actions and realize the measures set forth in their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the UNFCCC.

UNEP Reports World Record in Renewable Energy Investments [viewed]

global_trends_rei24 March 2016: A UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report, titled 'Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2016' (GTR), finds that global investments in renewables in 2015 hit a new record high at US$286 billion and that, for the first time, investments in renewables in developing countries topped those of developed countries.

Human Rights Council Expresses Concern over Housing, Refugee Policy [viewed]

OHCHR24 March 2016: The 31st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) concluded in Geneva, Switzerland, with UN representatives and advisors expressing concern over the arbitrary detention of refugees and migrants to Europe, the homelessness crisis worldwide, and the impacts of inequality on human rights. Panel discussions during the three-week session addressed ways to mainstream human rights in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and closer cooperation with climate actors on the right to health, among other issues.

East Africa Legislative Assembly Passes Watershed Disaster Risk Bill [viewed]

east_african14 March 2015: The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has passed the 'Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Bill 2013' in an effort to curb the impact of natural and manmade hazards in the region. The bill, the first such regional legislation in Africa, aims to enhance the coordination of disaster preparedness, management, protection and mitigation measures. The adoption of the bill marks a significant step in Africa's implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030, which was adopted in March 2015.

Executive Board Considers CDM's Future under Paris Agreement [viewed]

UNFCCC11 March 2016: At its 88th meeting, the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) elected Eduardo Calvo, Peru, as Chair and Frank Wolke, Germany, as Vice-Chair, for 2016. In addition, the Board set in motion the CDM's "evolving role" in international climate action, taking up a request from the 11th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 11) in December 2015 to analyze options to use the CDM for other uses.

UN Special Rapporteur Highlights Climate Change Impacts on Human Rights [viewed]

united_nations_human_rights4 March 2016: A global temperature increase of one or two degrees Celsius would adversely affect human rights, including the rights to life, development, food, water, health and housing, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, John Knox, told the Human Rights Council (HRC). Knox stressed that human rights obligations with respect to climate change include decisions about how much climate protection to pursue, as well as the mitigation and adaptation measures through which protection is achieved.

UN Statistical Commission Agrees on SDG Indicator Framework as "Practical Starting Point" [viewed]

47unsc11 March 2016: The UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) agreed, "as a practical starting point," with the global indicator framework proposed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs), noting that the indicators are "subject to further technical refinement." The Commission also took decisions on capacity building for national statistical systems, and climate change and governance statistics.
