WMO Maps Mortality and Economic Loss from Extreme Events [viewed]

WMO11 July 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) of the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) in Belgium have jointly published the ‘Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes 1970-2012,' which describes the distribution and impacts of weather, climate and water-related disasters, and highlights measures to increase resilience.

FCPF Carbon Fund Selects Three Country Programmes [viewed]

worldbank-fcpfJuly 2014: The 'Chair's Summary' of the tenth meeting of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Carbon Fund (C10) has been released, with Duncan Marsh, C10 Chair, highlighting the selection of Chile and Viet Nam into the Carbon Fund pipeline. The Republic of the Congo, which also presented its Emission Reductions Program Idea Note (ER-PIN), was provisionally selected.

Event: African Regional Workshop on NAMAs [viewed]

The UNFCCC Secretariat is organizing an African Regional Wokshop on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) to: facilitate the exchange of best practices and lessons learnt in preparation and implementation of NAMAs by providing a platform to showcase NAMAs and innovative financing options; collaborate with international partners to conduct the workshops and ensure synergy, coherence, cost effectiveness and avoid duplication; provide a platform for networking by bringing experts of developing countries and international organizations/donors together; provide partners from international organizations with an opportunity to better understand capacity building needs of countries in the region so that they can target their technical support to meet specific needs of developing countries; and explore how and by what means the experiences gained in implementation of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) standards could be linked with NAMAs.

G-77/China, Others Hold Side Events at First UNEA [viewed]

unea27 June 2014: The 50th Anniversary of the Group of 77 and China (G-77/China) was commemorated during the first meeting of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 23-27 June 2014. The commemoration was one of over 40 UNEA side events, which also included discussions on air quality in African cities, sustainable consumption and production (SCP), sound management of chemicals and waste, illegal trade in wildlife, and green and decent jobs.

FAO Assesses Adaptation by Malawian Farmers [viewed]

The study finds that there is no single strategy for adaptation, which is driven by a number of structural and capacity-related variables.

UN Secretary-General Meets with Business, Investors, Governments on Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

United Nations Global Compact2 July 2014: The 2014 UN Global Compact Board meeting, chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, focused on key priorities, including ongoing work to improve good governance, scale up corporate sustainability, and advance the private sector's role in the post-2015 development agenda. In his remarks to the Board, which held its biannual meeting at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 2 July 2014, Ban said 2015 marks the 15th anniversary of the Global Compact, which is "the first and only public-private initiative of the UN based on network governance.”

UNEP Discusses Financing Green Economy at UNEA [viewed]

UNEP25 June 2014: Environment leaders, policy makers and financial experts convened for the Symposium on Financing the Green Economy on the sidelines of the first meeting of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA). The Symposium examined how private financial capital can be mobilized to deliver long-term sustainable prosperity, as a necessary complement to public expenditure. It was organized by the UN Environment Programme's Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and the UNEP Inquiry on The Design of a Sustainable Financial System (UNEP Inquiry), and took place on 25 June 2014, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Event: 12th Meeting of the UN-REDD Policy Board [viewed]

The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) will convene the 12th meeting of its Policy Board in order to reflect on the implications of Decisions from the 19th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The meeting will also consider the development of the UN-REDD Strategy for the period 2016-2021 and will consider National Programme Submission Forms from Argentina, Cote d'Ivoire and Mongolia.
