African Workshop Builds Capacity on National GHG Inventories [viewed]

MRV27 March 2015: The Third African Regional Workshop, titled ‘Technical Training on National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories and Developing GHG Reporting Programmes' and hosted by the International Partnership on Mitigation and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV), brought together participants from Angola, Egypt, the Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Event: AfDB Annual Meetings 2015 [viewed]

During its Annual Meetings 2015, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will celebrate its 50th anniversary and elect its next president. The meetings will be held under the theme 'Africa and the New Global Landscape'. The agenda includes, inter alia: the launches of the African Economic Outlook (AEO 2015) and the Africa Ecological Futures Report; discussions on youth leaders, gender equality, Ebola, agribusiness, Africa's Power Challenge, local currency bond markets, stock exchanges, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); high-level events on the anticipated global climate change agreement and financing Africa's development post-2015; and meetings of the Board of Governors.

Russian Federation, Gabon Submit INDCs [viewed]

flags_russia_gabon1 April 2015: The Governments of the Russian Federation and Gabon have submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the UNFCCC Secretariat. With their submissions, a total of 35 parties have formally announced their INDCs. The Russian Federation's contribution brings the total emissions from industrialized countries covered by INDCs to nearly 80%. Gabon is the first African country to announce an INDC.

ECOSOC Hosts Integration Segment on Employment and Decent Work [viewed]

ECOSOC1 April 2015: The 2015 Integration Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) addressed the theme of 'Achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all.' Bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors, in dialogue with UN Member States and civil society representatives, the Segment examined policy recommendations for decent work and employment, and how these issues fit in with ongoing discussions on the post-2015 development agenda and other UN processes.

African Finance Ministers Address FfD, Data Revolution, Climate Change [viewed]

UNECA AU31 March 2015: The Eighth Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union (AU) Specialised Technical Committee of Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration, and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development agreed on a ministerial statement that addresses progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and support for the post-2015 development agenda, financing for development (FfD), the data revolution and climate change, among other issues. The meeting convened under the theme, ‘Implementing Agenda 2063: Planning, Mobilizing and Financing for Development.'

March 2015 Sustainable Energy Finance Update [viewed]

march_2015_sustainable_rnergyMarch 2015: Sustainable energy finance projects in Albania, Armenia, Chad, China, Georgia, Honduras, Latvia, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and the EU were announced by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Climate Investment Funds (CIF), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), European Commission, European Investment Bank (EIB), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and World Bank during the month of March. In addition, the multilateral development banks (MDBs) and World Bank released publications related to sustainable energy finance, and EBRD and the World Bank hosted energy efficiency and renewable energy events.

Event: G7 Summit [viewed]

In addition to standing agenda items on the global economy and foreign, security and development policy, the heads of state and government of the Group of Seven (G7) will consider: protection of the marine environment, marine governance and resource efficiency; antibiotic resistance, neglected and poverty-related diseases, and Ebola; retail and supply chain standards; and empowering self-employed women and women in vocational training. On development policy, the G7 will address in particular the post-2015 development agenda, as well as other conferences taking place in 2015, such as the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC. The Group will also continue its work on the Rome G7 Energy Initiative for Energy Security. On the second day of the Summit, G7 leaders will hold a dialogue with leaders from African nations. The G7 members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US.

Event: 2nd Africa Ecosystem Based Adaptation for Food Security Conference 2015 (EBAFOSC 2) [viewed]

Taking place under the theme, 'Re-imagining Africa's Food Security Now and into the Future under a Changing Climate,' this conference will convene a number of round-tables, discussions and plenary sessions to discuss how ecosystem based adaptation (EBA) can be used to improve food security across the continent. Sessions will address: building scalable and inclusive business models for EBA-driven agriculture; innovative financing models for EBA-driven agriculture; the role of youth, women, and information technology in EBA-driven agriculture; the roles of education, the private sector and South-South cooperation in advancing EBA; innovations to reduce post-harvest food loss; and climate change and resilience through EBA as well as policy frameworks and implementation.
