Event: Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo [viewed]

The Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo will focus on reforming Nigerian power and is taking place via a partnership with Nigerian's Energy Commission, Renewable energy programme of the Ministry of Environment, Presidential Action Committee on Power (PACP), as well as REEEP, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Global Compact, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and others. The event will bring together renewable energy power professionals, government and civil society representatives, as well as over 200 exhibiting companies from all over the world. It aims to: create a platform for all stakeholders to network and transfer knowledge and skills; raise awareness and educate the public about climate change in Nigeria and the world; showcase both local and international initiatives and technologies that are at the forefront of renewable energy and climate change resilience; mobilize Nigerians across all sectors to act on climate change in all aspects of their lives; and create a platform for business, government and NGOs to showcase alternative energy solutions and climate change initiatives and technologies.

Event: 18th Session of the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission [viewed]

The 18th session of the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission will convene alongside the second African Forestry and Wildlife Week and will consider the theme "The Importance of Governance and Benefit Sharing in the Sustainable Management of African Forests, Trees and Wildlife". It is expected that the session will underscore the importance of good governance in natural resource management as well as emphasize the need to include all stakeholders in decision making, implementation and benefit sharing for sustainable forest and wildlife resource management.

UN CC:Learn Selects Pilot Countries for Climate Change Learning [viewed]

3 August 2011: The UN CC:Learn Steering Group has announced the selection of Benin, Uganda and the Dominican Republic to participate in the 2011-2013 pilot implementation phase of the UN CC:Learn's “Pilot Projects to Strengthen Human Resources, Learning and Skills Development,” aimed at supporting countries to develop a strategic approach to climate change learning.

South African Ministers Outline Priorities for Durban [viewed]

2 August 2011: In a press briefing, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa and incoming President of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC, together with South African Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa, described South Africa's preparations to ensure it hosts an international event that meets UN requirements as well as their priorities for the Durban Climate Change Conference.

The briefs use a selection of climate scenarios to model hydrological and temperature impacts on productivity and income, as well as adaptation scenarios.

Event: Training Workshop on Payments for Ecosystem Services and REDD+ [viewed]

This workshop, convened by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), Forest Trends and the International Katoomba Group, with the support of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), is to provide African policy makers, private sector representatives as well as those from Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) with an increased understanding of the opportunities available from payments for ecosystem services (PES). The workshop will also highlight the of potential PES to create incentives for moving towards a practice of natural resource management that takes the true values of carbon, water and biodiversity environmental services into account.

Event: Fourth Special Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) [viewed]

The Fourth Special Session of AMCEN will provide a platform for African countries to further consolidate and enhance Africa's common negotiating position on climate change ahead of the Durban Climate Change Conference and look towards UNCSD.
